A floating stair rail made by Justin drew praise from a Morrell Metalsmiths customer in November 2024: the homeowner called it sturdy without being bulky and said coordination by email was easy. The Colrain shop advertises handmade home products and custom railings, lighting fixtures, and firescreens. A January 2022 Google reviewer described working with Evan on an indoor firewood rack for a Southern Vermont cabin. After conversations and emails, the customer visited the shop to finalize the plans and paid a deposit. They said Evan later called to say the firewood rack, bathroom towel racks, and toilet paper holders were ready. The reviewer also ordered fireplace tools after seeing the quality of the work. Morrell also teaches blacksmithing. In January 2026, a participant in Justin's “A Taste of Blacksmithing” class described him as patient and engaging. A June 2022 reviewer said a group of beginners enjoyed a work-group visit and learned a lot. There is also a recent complaint about an order and unanswered email. In a June 2026 Google review, a customer said they had ordered ceiling hooks on May 22 and heard nothing almost a month later. They reported requesting information by email without receiving a response. Google shows a 4.8-star average from 29 ratings.
“Justin Morrell of Morrell Metalsmiths of Colrain, Mass., pose with the Wheel of Philosophy, a work in progress created by Thies and Ferreira and being put together by Morrell.”
“After a brief carpentry detour, Fred began apprenticing at West Village Forge, now Morrell Metalsmiths, in Colrain, Mass.”
I ordered some ceiling hooks May 22nd and it is almost one month later and have heard nothing. I requested information via e-mail and they have not responded.
I took Justin's class "A Taste of Blacksmithing" this past month. I had a blast! Justin was a great teacher. He was funny, engaging, and patient. He knew so much about blacksmithing and made learning the craft fun.
We love the floating stair rail that Justin made. It’s extremely sturdy, without being bulky or oversized. The Morrell team is a pleasure to work with, and we coordinated everything easily via email .
Did a trip out here with a work group and everyone had a blast. We were all newbies and we learned a lot and left wanting more. The Morrells are polite, helpful and really talented. Highly recommended!
Wow. I'm not sure I've found a hidden gem, because they seem pretty well known in the area. That being said, boy am I happy I found them. I had been searching the interwebs trying to find an indoor firewood rack for our Southern Vermont cabin. I kept finding things on Amazon, Lowes, Home Depot and/or other websites, but I've grown tired of the cheap steel you get with those sites/stores. Sadly my generation really don't know what quality metal is because of these websites and stores. Craftmanship? Not so much. Enter a local business that churns out quality metal work. After a few conversations/emails with Evan, I stopped by the shop to finalize the plans. After putting my deposit down, Evan gave me a call letting me know my firewood rack and some bathroom towel racks and toilet paper holders, were ready. In addition I ended up ordering some fireplace tools based on the quality. Overall all great experience and I'm looking forward to taking one of their classes one of these days.
