New England Total Basement Finishing is a Middleborough, Massachusetts general contractor that takes on basement remodeling, gut renovations, additions, and whole-home projects, along with kitchen and bathroom work. Reviews are few and both are negative. A 2023 review described a basement gut renovation stalled for weeks after subcontractors went unpaid, with the owner giving explanations that didn't hold up under questioning. A 2020 review reported flooring installed over an improperly prepped subfloor, property damage during the job, and a final payment charged before the work was complete. The company's Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor license (#188916) expired in 2023 and does not appear to have been renewed since — worth confirming directly before signing anything. With only a couple of reviews to go on, ask for recent references and a payment schedule tied to completed milestones. Homeowners weighing a basement project here should treat the license lapse and the two detailed complaints as real cautions, and get firm terms in writing before work begins.

Subcontractors completed demolition in 2 days, then disappeared without any word for 3 weeks. In that time I reached out to the subcontracted plumber, who informed me he could not start until NETBF paid him as agreed. That was the holdup--this company doesn't pay their subcontractors on time. I contacted the owner repeatedly to ask about the delay and the owner lied to me each time, blaming the permitting process. Owner told me we could use my electrician for the electrical portion of the project, then she never contacted him. I kept trying to put them in touch with each other and the owner kept "losing" thr contact info. A month into the project the owner asked my electrician to put in a bid. Owner never got back to hom, so I took the bid and told both of them via email that the bid was acceptable to me, and that if it wasn't acceptable to the owner, I was happy to pay the extra beyond what had been budgeted. Owner ignored that email and weeks later told me her electrician would work on my project the next week. I wrote back, referencing our many conversations on the matter and the owner finally agreed to just remove the electrical from my contract (because she "didn't want to upset me"). Unexplained delay after delay for the general subcontractor's work while the very honest plumber did a great job very efficiently, as did my own electrician. There are more details, but long story short: I booked this job for beginning of September and was told it would be complete "well before Thanksgiving." The job was finally finished January 7. Then a few weeks later I realized they never put back the vent so my dryer would vent outside. Called and emailed NETBF to make it right and have not received a response for over a month. This after paying every installment on time throughout the project. Do not hire this company.

The last I heard from the owner was repeated voicemail and emails the day the project ended to please pay them quickly because they are a small business, yadda yadda. I paid that installment as I had paid every installment before and have never heard from the owner since. My impression bssed on my experience is that the business is not solvent and cannot afford a quality general contractor, and regularly does not pay its specialized contractors on time.

A COMPLETE TRAIN-WRECK! Do NOT waste your money or time with this company our experience was riddled with errors ranging from abysmal customer service, terrible craftsmanship, inadequate knowledge regarding how to prep the floors, damage to my home, etc. Although I could write a small book about our DREADFUL experience, here are some of the highlights: Our old carpet had been glued down to the floor. NE Total Basement removed the carpet and installed the new flooring. Due to a sound akin to popping bubble wrap when walking on the new floor, the titles were removed, a rubber mat was placed over the cement, and the tiles were reinstalled. It was confirmed by an other company that all of this could have been avoided had NE Total Basement appropriately addressed the glue from the carpet from the onset. The subcontractor broke our window and permanently damaged our couch with paint. Erica, NE Total Basement owner, has not refunded us the cost to repair the window or made things right about the couch. The subcontractors crew smoked inside our home. The subcontractor did a poor job of installing the floor so much so that there are small gaps between the tiles, many of the tiles do not sit flush against the floor, and some are just broken. Terrible, terrible painting job! Failure to repair/repaint baseboards that were damaged during the re-installation of the flooring. Last but certainly not least, Erica, NE Total Basements owner, charged our credit card for the FINAL payment weeks before the project was completed and WITHOUT our consent! This list could go on and on and in greater detail, but this review is too long as it is! Spare yourself a tremendous headache and work with a different company!
