North Shore Home Repair & Maintenance is a three-person shop at 26 North Ave in Winthrop, run as a sole proprietorship by Jim Barone since February 2005 according to its BBB listing, taking on kitchens, bathrooms, additions, decks, siding, windows, landscaping and general handyman work. What a homeowner should know first is that everything written about this business is old, and the loudest account is bad. A 2014 BuildZoom reviewer wrote that they paid Barone almost $27,000 for a front porch and a bathroom, that less than half the porch was finished, and that an inspection of the interior work led to a cease-and-desist affecting an apartment they had planned to rent. Nothing written since answers it. The Angi record, all of it from 2008 and 2009, splits. Two customers gave four stars — one for window frames that "now work well" given their age, another who wrote that he keeps appointments and provides detailed estimates and receipts. Two others describe the same failure mode: a 2009 customer who had paid in advance was still waiting for an antique table and for returned calls, and a 2008 customer chasing a skylight part found the phone number no longer in service. On licensing, BuildZoom shows no active licence on file for the business and a licence record it was unable to verify — a directory's statement, not a registry finding, but a specific one worth resolving before any deposit changes hands. BBB has the business unaccredited and Not Rated, saying it lacks the information to grade it. If you are considering them for small carpentry or handyman work in Winthrop, ask for the current Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration number, check it against the state registry yourself, and get references from jobs finished in the last year — the written history here stops in 2014.
DO NOT HIRE! I hired James Barone (owner and founder of company) to redo my front porch and a bathroom in my house. I payed Barone almost $27,000 and he took the money and ran. He completed less then half the porch and when I had his inside house work inspected, I was told that I will be given a cease desist letter. That meant I could not rent the apartment Barone was working on to any tenants until I got all the work he did fixed. He told me I needed things that I really didn't like structural damage to my foundation and inside the house. He made a house that was livable into a non livable residence. I am currently pursuing legal matters against him to get my money back. DO NOT USE THIS CONTRACTOR BEWARE STAY AWAY. WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND RUN AND NOT FINISH ANY WORK IF HE EVEN STARTS ANY!!!!!!!
The owner was very responsive when he was trying to get my business. I hired him to stain some windows and to repair an antique table. The stain he used is a shade or two lighter than the rest of the wood work and his sanding was somewhat uneven. Worse, he has had the table for repair since November or December 2008, and I have not been able to get him to return it - repaired or not. Initally, I was understanding. I understood that he had some personal issues. Since that time, I have yet to recieve any of the return calls and e-mails he claims he sent in answer to my calls - or my table. I foolishly paid him in advance of his completing.
Very professional and complete. I am looking forward to doing business with them soon.
Considering the age and condition of these windows, everything now works well.
Keeps appointments. willing to make adjustments. Details estimates and receipts.
