One person has written publicly about hiring Paul Hill, and it did not go well. In a September 2024 review of a $100,000 full gut renovation, the customer described "several issues during project", said the contractor "doesn't check work of employees", and called out "poor quality work for plumbing, electrical, and carpentry", cheap materials, finishes that were poor "if it even gets finished", layout changes made without approval, and being a "big hassle getting a hold of". It is a single account, it is nearly two years old, and it is the only customer voice anywhere — which is why it weighs as heavily here as it does. The paperwork reads better. Paul Hill's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #194667, is active in the state registry under his own name, and BuildZoom shows 44 permitted projects — roughly eight over the past three years, typical permit around $32,500, mostly cosmetic renovations of Dorchester and Jamaica Plain multi-families. BuildZoom lists a second registration as active and an older one it marks cancelled. The company sells itself on lead paint removal, which it says it is certified to carry out — a real specialty in Boston's older housing stock — and on a Construction Supervisor Licence it says it holds with the state's Division of Professional Licensure, though it publishes no number for that one. It also states it is a Minority Business Enterprise. It trades under more than one name: the website is P Hill Contracting, while the licence and permit records read Paul J. Hill Construction LLC. Both carry the same phone number. If you call, ask for the Construction Supervisor Licence number and check it, along with registration #194667, at the state yourself. Then get the specifics the 2024 complaint turned on nailed down in writing: who inspects the subcontracted plumbing and electrical, what happens when a layout changes mid-job, and what the finish standard is at handover.
