Pedrick Mechanical Services, Inc. is a Medford, Massachusetts outfit built around heating, air conditioning and the plumbing work that goes with it — water heaters, furnaces, faucets, garbage disposals — the calls people make when something breaks and needs fixing fast. The clearest thread through its written reviews, most from 2003 to 2007, is speed on the actual emergency call. In a November 2007 review, a customer described a water heater that blew on a Sunday night; a call the next morning at 8:30 brought Ray out by 3:00, with the new heater installed in an hour and a half. An October 2007 review told a similar story about a late-night pipe leak: rather than charge time-and-a-half, Ray advised waiting until morning, then showed up at 7:15 a.m., diagnosed the problem, fixed it, and cleaned up afterward in under two hours — "VERY stress-free," the customer wrote. Older reviews from 2003 and 2004 describe the same pattern: quick callbacks, an actual written estimate when other plumbers wouldn't provide one, and jobs finished the same or next day. The written record isn't spotless. A September 2007 review recounts an outside faucet repair where a pipe Ray had fixed later failed on its own, flooding the customer's basement — though he returned within the hour and made it right. A December 2003 review describes a three-hour wait for a part and some confusion over the final bill, even as the customer praised how quickly Ray communicated throughout. Worth knowing before calling: the company's directory listing states it does not offer free estimates, and its written reviews — while consistently positive on responsiveness — run through 2007, so there's little on file about how the business operates today. For an emergency furnace or water-heater call in the Medford area, the reviews suggest a contractor who shows up fast and makes a mistake right when one happens; anyone booking now should confirm current pricing and availability directly, since the written record on file predates the last two decades of the business.

My water heater blew on Sunday night. I called around 8:30 the following morning. Ray was out by 3:00 with the new heater and installed it within 1.5 hrs.
Since my leak was only an emergency in my own mind, he advised me (circa 9:45 p.m.) to turn off the water until the morning to avoid paying time-and-a-half. He came out promptly at 7:15 a.m. Found the problem, explained how it would be fixed, cleaned up (a fair amount of drywall came down, so the fact that he cleaned up was really nice), and was out in under 2 hours. VERY stress-free.
Although he fixed our outside faucet, he did not note that the pipe was ready to fail. When we turned on the faucet for the first time, the pipe soldering broke and water flooded our basement. However, he came back quickly (<1hour) and completed the necessary repairs.
I would strongly recommend Ray Pedrick. He gave me the best estimate, stuck to it, and got the job done quickly, which was important because he was replacing a badly leaking hot water heater. He was the only one of the several plumbers I contacted who provided a written estimate; some never even called back. I gave Ray slightly lower marks in Communications and Timeliness only because there were small delays in getting back to me at times. I attribute that more to Ray being very busy at this time of year (early August) than to anything else.
I don't know much about heating systems and what is and isn't fair. Ray called quickly and was willing to come out immediately. He called when he was leaving the office to indicate that he would be a little late. He left my house to get a part at his office but he did not return until 3 hours later because he said he had an unexpected meeting. This all was not a trouble, and I was impressed with his quick communication. My unsettled feeling is that I described the furnace before he came and it seemed that the broken part was a pretty obvious part of the machine. He pulled up in a huge truck but he didn't have the part in it. I had to leave a friend at the house for payment, and Ray told him that the travel time was an hour to go back to the shop, 30 minutes of actual labor, and he charged for 2 hours. The furnace has worked perfectly since he did his work.
