Pella Windows & Doors, Inc. of Eastern MA, ME & NH is the Haverhill-based Pella distributor covering eastern Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire, installing custom windows, entry and patio doors, and skylights. Its BBB profile (filed under the related name New England Window & Door, LLC) puts it at 36 years in business, though the company is not BBB accredited and carries a D- grade there. The written record swings between very good and very bad outcomes. In a 2014 review, a homeowner who says they interviewed seven other window companies chose it to replace 22 windows across a two-family duplex, praising the crew for coordinating two simultaneous installs on the same day. In 2016, another customer described a patio door that had rotted from roof runoff getting replaced years past warranty at a steep discount. But three more recent accounts tell a different story: a 2021 review describes defective seals on ProLine 450 sliding doors that let water into a finished basement, tied to a class-action lawsuit against Pella over the same product; a 2020 review describes doors and windows mis-ordered twice, arriving unplumb, untrimmed and in the wrong color; and a 2018 review describes a sales consultant misrepresenting a promotion's end date to rush a signature. Separately on BBB, a customer describes calling for ten months about a warranty repair before a technician finally arrived with the part. Before booking, it's worth asking pointed questions about installation quality control and warranty turnaround. These aren't one-off scheduling gripes — they describe measurable defects (unsealed panels, unplumb frames, wrong materials) and a slow response when something goes wrong. BBB shows three complaints filed against the company, none of them answered. This is a reasonable call for a straightforward window or door swap where materials and scheduling go smoothly — the 2014 job shows what its product line and crew can deliver under good conditions. But given the installation failures documented from 2018 through 2021, get the contract terms, seal and flashing details, and a written post-install inspection commitment before signing, and ask directly how a defect claim like the ProLine 450 seal issue would be handled.
Defective seal on all 5 lower clad panels on two ProLine 450 clad sliders leading to leaks that ruined finished basement below as water pours in through wood seams on the INSIDE of the panels. Pella lost a class-action suit on this. Purchased from Lowes, serial numbers were never entered with Pella so notification of class action never occurred. The LifeTime limited warranty claim is worthless. When I called Pella, I was told 'thank you for letting us know - is there anything else I can assist you with'. When I called Lowes, was told nothing we could do. Forced to caulk all panels to prevent any further damage but panels need to be replaced.
Zero Stars if that were allowed -We purchased 2 doors and 2 windows and had Pella install them. They mis-ordered the parts twice, had to send multiple teams (first time, doors were not plumb or square, no interior trim on the windows, wrong color and style doors, exterior trim was installed over rotted wood, and the 2 doors didn't even match each other, second time - more wrong doors and unprepared to fix the windows or exterior trim. Third time fixed everything but charged us extra and Pella wouldn't return my calls by that time) and they lied to us - we would not have hired them knowing they send only contractors. we couldn't get someone on the phone high up enough to hear our complaints and there's no apparent high level person locally. Tom apologized repeatedly but much of what went wrong seemed to be his lack of supervision of the project and he stopped returning my calls.. They overcharged us and charged us in full on card 3 months before the work was done. The 2 day job took 5 months. Run Away!!!!!
There were red flags from the consultation. The consultant lied about the end-date of a promotion to try to be sure I would sign a contract before his sales month ended when the actual end-date was over two weeks away. Then q week before a 2-day install appointment, I received a call stating that the install would take 3 days. I rearranged my schedule and took another day off. Less than 24 hours before the scheduled start day, I received an email confirming my installation date for 2 months out. When I spoke to Pella, they said that one of my windows (the job was for 2) would not be received in time. I can't believe they are so uninformed that they didn't know a week prior that the second window was going to be a week late. So now the job is back to two days instead of three, I'm off a day without pay that they won't be here, I've already moved all the furniture out of the room that now won't be worked in, and they arbitrarily picked a day to reschedule without consulting me or letting me know until I contacted them. And no one at Pella has a care in the world about the trouble their lack of attention and lack of respect for my time has created. Stay away - the Haverhill shop is under Pella of New England, so just stay away from all of them.
I purchased Pella sliding patio door. It got rot from water runoff onto my patio from the roof with no gutters. 5 years after the warranty, they replaced the door for a very discounted price, much below list price and even significantly below my contractors discounted price. Very good people to interact with during the process as well.
I chose, after 'interviewing' seven other window companies, Pella to replace 22 windows in my home, which is a two-family duplex. Thanks to another customer cancel, 2 crews came, one working on my side, the other on my tenants. I had chosen Fiberglass windows. They were mindful of personal furniture/belongings ( which I took great pains to cover) and floors, that they covered. When the windows were in place, they sealing around the sides if the windows where they met the molding. Each staff person worked as if he was sealing his own window. When they were done, a supervisor inspected all and talked to me about my response, which was super. Everything they had brought was taken and any mess they made they cleaned. I was so pleased with both their work and this product, that I later hired them to replace my front door, which was having structural problems. Again, I had a great consultation from which to make my choice and as the door was being installed, and problems were found, I was given a quote for any additional work, which I approved, and the result was worth the extra time and expertise that my door received. I love the windows and I love the door.
