Petro Home Services' only Massachusetts location sits on Newbury Street in Peabody, delivering heating oil and handling furnace, heat pump and gas-conversion work across the North Shore. It's part of a multi-state home-heating company with offices from Connecticut to Rhode Island, but Peabody is its sole New England outpost. BBB's file on the Peabody business goes back further than the Petro name — a 1903 start date, 123 years in business, and accreditation since 1987. The last six months of reviews read rough: five of six are negative, and a pattern repeats across them. Customers describe oil showing up after they'd explicitly asked Petro to pause or stop — one seller says a tank was filled five times after telling the company the property had sold, another says a delivery arrived a day after being told the account was on hold. A separate thread of complaints is about money: a customer on a "flexible pricing" plan watched the per-gallon rate jump a dollar between billing cycles with no adjustment offered, and another was billed for fees they say they'd been told in writing would be waived. BBB's file lists 13 complaints, cited as the reason for its B+ grade — a contrast with Google's 4-star average across roughly 400 ratings. It isn't all friction. One customer credits a technician, Jacob, with a thorough, clearly explained annual furnace tune-up, and a longer-tenured customer describes quick response times under an active service contract after switching from oil to a gas furnace install. Before signing up for automatic delivery, it's worth getting any pause, stop, or fee-waiver request confirmed in writing rather than taking a verbal assurance at face value.
Extremely disappointed is not a strong enough statement for my perception of Petro. I sent a certified letter (for which I did receive a response) asking Petro to deliver on an as need bases as I was selling the property. Also, I asked them to change my mailing address. They did neither. I found out they had filled the oil tank FIVE times after I called to say the property was sold. Now, I need to pay for the oil AND an oil pump out as the new owners are switching to all electric...to the tune of $1,100. Extremely disappointed.
Jacob from Petro Home Services - excellent preventive maintenance on my oil heating furnace. Professional, knowledgeable, and very thorough throughout the annual tune-up. He carefully inspected the system, explained his findings clearly, and made sure everything was operating safely and efficiently. I really appreciated his attention to detail and friendly attitude. It's reassuring to know the heating system is in great shape for the coming year. Thank you, Jacob, for your outstanding service!
I’m honestly surprised this company is still in business. My experience has been nothing short of extremely frustrating and unprofessional. I was initially told that if I didn’t sign up for service, they would come remove the tanks. To avoid the hassle, I agreed but only after receiving written confirmation that all associated fees would be waived. After scheduling an inspection to begin service, I was then informed that I actually own the tanks contradicting what I had been led to believe. And to top this all off, the company still charged me the very fees they explicitly said would be waived. This level of miscommunication and lack of integrity is wildly unacceptable. This company is incredibly shady
If something sounds too good to be true it probably is. This company’s concept is great, make sure you never run out of oil, even when you explicitly ask them not to deliver oil to you they still do and expect you to pay for it after you EXPLICITLY ask them not to deliver oil. What an April fools joke to pay 5.259$ for oil in the spring.
BUYER BEWARE: Major Delivery & Communication Failure I have been a Petrol customer for approximately 3 years. My last delivery (February 2025) was around 70 gallons with no issues. In February 2026, I received an email stating I was due for a delivery within the next two weeks. That same day, I called Petrol and clearly requested that no deliveries be made for at least 3 months, or until I contacted them. I was told my account was placed on hold and that I was “all set.” Less than 24 hours later, a delivery was made anyway — for nearly three times the amount I’ve ever previously received. To summarize: I received advance notice of a potential delivery. I immediately called and requested a hold. I was told the hold was confirmed. A delivery still occurred the next day. The amount delivered was significantly larger than any prior order. I was billed for the delivery despite having requested a hold. When I contacted customer service to resolve the issue, the experience was extremely frustrating and unprofessional. At this point, I am disputing the delivery and billing, as it was not authorized after my cancellation request. I encourage anyone considering automatic delivery to get written confirmation of any account changes and monitor closely. I hope Petrol resolves this properly.
