I signed up for Petro Oil Services’ Smart Pay plan based entirely on their recommendation and calculations. Their representative reviewed my usage and assured me that $140 per month would cover my heating costs. I was specifically told that I would pay $140 per month and they would continue delivering oil as needed, eliminating the surprise of large bills. Eight months later, I received a call informing me that I owed nearly $3,000 because we had used more oil than their calculations anticipated. This was the first time I learned that I could be responsible for such a large balance. Had this possibility been clearly explained from the beginning, I would have made different decisions. What makes this especially frustrating is that Petro acknowledged the miscalculation was their error. They admitted they didn’t know how it happened, yet still expected me to pay the full balance. Their only offer was a $100 credit on a bill that resulted from their own mistake. A budgeting program is supposed to provide predictability and peace of mind. Instead, we were blindsided by a massive unexpected bill that forced us to cancel our family’s summer vacation. The disappointment of having to explain that to our three daughters was heartbreaking. Mistakes happen, but when a company admits the error was theirs and then takes virtually no responsibility for the consequences, that’s unacceptable. Based on my experience, I would be very cautious about relying on Petro’s Smart Pay estimates and promises.
WARNING !!!!! Zero stars!! Worst experience ever!!!! don’t use this company!!! First we got with them they said they offer a monthly payment plan so you don’t get wiped out in the winter then we found out they don’t until you have been there for a year or you can make payment in a 6 month payment plan of there estimated usage which was ridiculously higher than our actual usage. We finally got a new company but had to mail them there propane sensor back because they wouldn’t come get it and the new company wouldn’t put there’s on until petros was removed my wife has been making payments to them since for there ridiculously high propane prices they decided to send it to collections even tho she was making over 10% of what we owed a month then when we called they refused to take it off collections and charged us 50$ for sending it to collections they have a 100 causes and reasons to charge you more don’t even bother go local it’s cheaper and they actually care about your heating systems
Never a good experience.
*PETRO WILL SUE YOU* My experience with Petro Home Services is genuine and on public record in Rhode Island. PLEASE READ BEFORE CONSIDERING THIS PROVIDER. They currently operate in 12 states and I’m sharing this review across platforms to WARN others — especially first-time homeowners. Petro will trap you as a customer and even take legal action over account balances that are incorrect. They are aggressive, disorganized, and deceptive. Background: I signed up with Petro as a first-time homeowner in Fall 2020. They offered enticing incentives — including a “Buy 1 year of service for $214, get the 2nd year FREE” offer — which made them seem like the best deal. I enrolled in their “Premium Plan” for discounted maintenance and repairs, and also in their “Smart Pay Plan,” which requires monthly payments (around $300/month) to pre-fund your oil and service expenses. It’s marketed as “peace of mind,” but it’s really a way to collect your money faster. In Winter 2022, I needed a heating system repair. That’s when I discovered Petro had auto-renewed (and charged me for) the second year of service — which was supposed to be FREE. I spent months trying to get a refund. Despite having email proof of the original offer, they tried to deny the promo existed. They gaslit me, refused to acknowledge documentation, and delayed everything. While I was trying to sort out the refund, I attempted to use the plan’s benefits, including a tune-up and repair visit. Petro canceled both appointments on their end to prioritize other customers. Meanwhile, my heating issue remained unresolved. It took them two months to send a tech who finally bled the pipes — then they charged me $350 for the visit, even though it was covered. It took yet another week of back-and-forth to get that refunded. When you’re enrolled in Smart Pay, they already have your money, and customer service becomes nonexistent. They routinely price-gouge — their oil prices were over $1 more per gallon than local providers. If you’re late on a payment, they will call you daily. They’ll come to your property without notice, leave you with unauthorized charges, and ignore your attempts to cancel services or deliveries. Legal Nightmare: Petro sued me for $1500. Here’s how: On 4/11/23, my balance was $0. On 4/13/23, they made an unauthorized delivery, claiming I never canceled auto-delivery (even though I did verbally — a lesson learned: always get it in writing). They added more fees over several months and in November 2023, renewed my old service plan, even though I had canceled it a year earlier and had no active contact with them. They then added more late fees and sold the debt to a collection lawyer. I fought back with documentation and even cited other customer reviews with similar experiences. In court, they had a representative testify — under oath — that she personally listened to three years of my phone calls and found no cancellation request (which is laughable). They “generously” waived the late fees and unauthorized plan charges, but the judge still ruled I had to pay $926. Petro’s strategy is to bleed you dry — then take legal action once your balance hits zero, to lock you back into service. It’s a vicious cycle. They prey on first-time homeowners, using aggressive and manipulative tactics. Final Advice: If you’re currently with Petro, leave now. If you must contact them, do it by email only so you have everything in writing. NEVER rely on phone conversations. Keep documentation of every interaction. Petro is a predatory, unethical company that will drain your time, money, and mental energy. Throw away any “special offers” you receive — they’re bait. Petro is a nightmare you don’t want to live through.
