Pioneer Custom Builders & Developers is a Rockland custom-building and millwork shop that says it has operated since 1984, led by president Stu Hemingway, offering residential and commercial construction, remodeling, custom kitchens, bathroom vanities, cabinetry, and millwork design and installation. A September 2026 Google review called Stu Hemingway one of the best craftsmen the reviewer has met, describing a custom-designed coffee bar and a custom-installed gas fireplace. But an August 2023 review told a very different story: a builder with almost 20 years in the construction industry called it the worst experience they'd had, after a client ordered $80,000 in custom cabinetry from Pioneer for a custom home the reviewer had built. BuildZoom lists a Home Improvement Contractor license and one other license for the company; Pioneer's own site also states Stu Hemingway holds a Construction Supervisor license, though that hasn't been verified against the state registry. With only two Google reviews spanning three years, one glowing and one a detailed complaint from a fellow industry professional about a large custom order, a homeowner considering a big custom millwork or cabinetry project with Pioneer would do well to ask for references from a comparable job before committing.
