Pioneer Custom Builders & Developers is a Rockland custom builder and millwork shop run by president Stu Hemingway, and its two written Google reviews could hardly be further apart. It says it has operated since 1984, doing construction, remodeling, custom kitchens, cabinetry, vanities and millwork, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration (#148148) is active. Google shows 3.7 stars from 6 ratings, and BuildZoom shows 37 projects. In September 2026, a customer called Stu Hemingway one of the best craftsmen they had met, describing a custom coffee bar and a gas fireplace he designed. In an August 2023 review, a builder said a client ordered $80,000 in custom cabinetry from the shop for a custom home, and the cabinets ran months behind schedule, half were built wrong and had to be rebuilt two or three times, and when the shop ran out of the needed veneer, cabinets were built with a different veneer. The builder also accused Stu of repeatedly misstating timeframes.
Stu Hemingway is probably one of the best craftsman I ever met. He custom designed our coffee bar, designed a custom installed a gas fireplace.
Absolute clown show. Worst experience I've ever had in almost 20 years in the Contruction industry. My client ordered 80k in custom cabinetry from them in a custom home I built. (He wanted to source the cabinets himeself because a friend had recommended pioneer as an excellent cabinet shop) The cabinets were months behind schedule, half of them built wrong and had to be rebuilt 2-3 times. Stu constantly lying about timeframes, excuses that didn't make sense. Then they ran out of the veneer they needed for the cabinets and instead of being honest about it he had his guys build cabinets with a different veneer and try to install them in the house and leave before anybody noticed (multimillion dollar brand new house). I caught them and yelled at them, told them to take the cabinets out and get off the job site and have stu call me to get this figured out. The homeowner told me Stu didn't want to send his guys back there anymore because I "was mean to them" LOL. To my knowledge they never finished the cabinets for my client and there are ongoing legal proceedings. TOTAL DISASTER mostly because of constant lying and unwillingness to be honest.
