PJZ Inc. is Peter Zanni's shop in Wenham, and the line on its Porch listing tells you what it is not: "We do not do handyman type jobs." The company describes 40 years of custom homes, additions, framing, masonry, carpentry and kitchen and bath work across roughly 47 towns from Lynn up to Newburyport. The written accounts are consistent and specific — and they are old, running 2012 to 2014, nine of them averaging 5.0 on Angi. What homeowners described then was a one-man-plus-crew operation that showed up at 8am and was gone by mid-afternoon with the site swept. A 2013 reviewer had custom doors ordered and hung, including a non-standard unit, and came home to a finished job and a spotless work area. A repeat customer that same year described new wood floors laid to meet a 100-year-old dining room floor seamlessly, with trim run around the brick fireplace. Another 2013 homeowner had a coat closet and cubbies built and noted the crew offered to cut lumber outdoors to keep the dust down. The most useful review is the least glowing one. In June 2013, a customer hit delays from a cabinet manufacturer and a lost permit, then found a bank of drawers had settled out of level; Zanni came back to reshim them, and returned again later to install a microhood that had arrived damaged. That is the behaviour worth paying for, and it is the one thing here that speaks to what happens when a job goes sideways. More recently, a recommendation on his LinkedIn profile calls him reliable and trustworthy and says the work is high quality — one person's word, not a verified fact. So: a long-running custom builder with a clean but dated paper trail. For an addition, a custom home, or finish carpentry on an older North Shore house, ask for addresses of jobs finished in the last two years and call those owners — the written history here will not do that work for you.
“Peter is reliable, trustworthy and his work is high quality. I would recommend him for any project large or small.”
Fabulous experience. 12 stars out of 10.
PJZ was polite, on time, provided an answer to all questions promptly. Final price was the same as the estimate, no surprise added costs. Work was quality and clean. We are very pleased with his work and would recommend him to anyone.
Peter and his crew did a great job on our doors. Firstly, Peter worked directly with me in selecting our doors and accommodating one that was non-standard requiring a custom order. Peter was always in touch via email which was great for me as my main form of contact. Peter made time on my schedule, arriving on off hours and days to take measurements and discuss. Ultimately the quality of his work stands out above all the other great points. I left for work at 8AM and he and his crew were already hard at work. I came home to a completed project and a spotless work area. Everything was done just right. I am sure I will be using Peter again on future projects!
It went very well actually. We did have a delay caused by the cabinet manufacturer and a delay due to the city losing a permit request. We found Peter to be honest, reasonable and trustworthy. He's not a charmer. He works rather than gabs but we were ok with that. He did come back to adjust a 15" bank of draws that had dropped (became unlevel) on the shims in order to have the 1"x3" mosaic backsplash installed on the level. I guess the true gauge of how good someone is is how quickly they respond when there is a problem and their demeanor. He responded right away and was great about doing it. He also came back at a later date to install the microhood. Ours arrived damaged and we weren't sure we could exchange. he offered to try and bang it out and install it rather than have us take a loss. In the end, the manufacturer replaced it but Peter had to make a trip back a week later to install. We found him to be very reasonable.
We are repeat customers of PJZ, and continue to be extremely impressed with his skill, professionalism, and reliability. PJZ replaced our old carpeting with new wood floors. He paid close attention to detail, with beautiful trim work around the brick fireplace. He also made the new wood floor connect seamlessly with the 100-year old wood floor in our dining room. Finally, he installed bifold doors in front of our washer and dryer. After visiting our home to provide an estimate and take measurements, Pete came back several weeks later once the materials were ready. He arrived promptly at 8 am on the scheduled work day, and was done by 4pm. He cleaned up the debris and demo spotlessly, and we could hardly tell he was there. The room looks beautiful, and we consider ourselves lucky to have found Pete. We recommend him highly, and are already talking with him about another job this summer.
