Halsey Platt founded Platt Builders in Ayer in 1992, having grown up in a 1730s house in Grafton working on construction projects with his father. Chris Brown, a long-time employee, was promoted to president in 2025, and the company says it became an employee-owned cooperative in 2026 — a conversion a June 2025 trade interview described while it was still underway, with 20 employees preparing to take over.
The projects that get written up are the awkward kind. A trade magazine described the company enlarging a 1797 house in 2022 by raising its roof rather than pushing out the footprint, and in 2023 gutting an outdated kitchen and rebuilding its layout; later that year a client already having work done asked for more room for her art studio. The Boston Design Guide gave the firm a gold award for best bathroom remodel under $75,000 in 2024, and Qualified Remodeler a 2022 gold for a residential interior under $100,000. Cabinetry is made in the company's own shop, Platt Cabinetry, and the finish-carpentry crews are in house.
Much of the written praise comes from the design side of the table. Interior designers and a landscape and interior design-build firm writing in 2025 and 2026 call Platt a trusted trade partner, describe a thoughtful and organized construction process, and say clients are kept informed from concept to completion. Two accounts come from the people paying for the work: a January 2023 customer who had spent a career selling building materials hired the firm to build their home and praised the team's experience and guidance, and a July 2021 customer described impeccable on-site cabinetry installation on a kitchen remodel, then came back for a master bathroom and closets.
One account runs strongly the other way. A customer writing in December 2020, on their third home and third major renovation, described an $80,000 remodel — a staircase, all the doors, flooring, exterior siding and a roof — that they say had to be almost entirely redone, including a metal cap fitted to a clay-lined chimney that they say caused water leakage with the risk of blockage and mold, and they say the company engaged a law firm rather than making repairs.
The public profiles also disagree with each other. Houzz publishes 4.8 stars from 22 reviews with work quality, communication and value each scored 4.0 directly beneath it; its About text claims over 25 years and more than 900 clients, while the company's own site says over thirty years and more than 700, and the Better Business Bureau counts 34 years from a 1992 start. BuildZoom, at 3.0 stars from two reviews, names an owner no other source does, and the BBB page still lists Halsey Platt as president.
Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration 154021 is confirmed active in the company's own name. A construction supervisor licence, CS-054102, and a lead-safe registration, LW000226, appear as attributed entries on the Better Business Bureau page, which accredits the firm at an A+ grade.
For a custom home, a whole-house renovation or a high-end kitchen or bath across the Concord, Lincoln and Lexington suburbs — especially where an architect or designer is already involved — this is a strong call; ask for homeowner references from the past two years, and settle in the contract how repair disputes get handled.
