In a November 2025 review, a homeowner described a large pine coming down on their house in a wind storm: BuildBak was on site in under 24 hours and had a temporary patch and shoring in place within 48. That is the job this Framingham company is built for — the call you make after a pipe lets go upstairs, after the neighbor's flood comes through your ceiling, after a driver takes out your front steps two weeks before you close on the sale. BuildBak is the rebranded Hamel Company. Local coverage in October 2022 reported the rebrand and the company's plan to open franchise locations, and the state registry still records the holder of record as Hamel Painters, Inc. doing business as BuildBak. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #171686, is active. The written history runs deep and points one direction: 118 reviews from 2022 through 2026 across four sources, with Google alone showing 5★ across 127 ratings. Read them and the same shape repeats — water damage, an insurance claim, and a project manager who keeps calling back. Homeowners writing through 2025 and 2026 name their PMs by name (John Norton, Erik Ostroff, Pablo, Steve Reesor, Andrey Smirnov, Matt), which is rarer than it sounds and says something about how the company assigns work. Plenty of these customers arrived by referral from a water-mitigation crew or their own insurer, and what they credit BuildBak with is the unglamorous half of a claim: documenting the damage, walking them through the insurance process, and sequencing the rebuild so a house missing its only shower gets it back. The hands-on work behind those claims is broad restoration carpentry — sheetrock and ceilings, flooring replacement, bathroom and kitchen rebuilds, plaster and paint after an ice-dam leak, and in one January 2026 job, custom molding milled to match a high-rise condo's original ceiling. What to ask about is schedule. A homeowner writing in December 2025 said their bathroom rehab started off slow with delayed start dates, though once crews were on site the work went cleanly. A customer in April 2026 was blunter about the shape of these projects: it is a long process, and big restorations take the time they take. Another, in July 2026, hit hiccups mid-job and stressed that the fix was a project manager who answered the phone. If you are staring at a flooded first floor and an insurance adjuster, this is the kind of outfit that specializes in exactly that. Before signing, pin down the start date in writing and ask who your project manager will be — on this record, that one name is what makes or breaks the experience.

Highly recommend BuildBak for your rebuild after a home setback. They are knowledgeable, well-organized, and highly skilled—overall fantastic to work with. After a plumbing leak in our upstairs bathroom claimed our bathroom and first-floor ceiling, we were left in a really tough situation—especially since we had just renovated those spaces 14 months prior! Both our plumber and our restoration pro recommended BuildBak. We gave them a call, and they inspired real confidence from square one. Pablo M. was our project manager. He was professional, organized, and calm. He advocated for what we needed with our insurance adjuster, coordinated smoothly with our plumber, and got the job done for us in a big way—a little bit ahead of schedule, too! His team is highly skilled across all trades (drywall, painting, floor and shower tiling, etc.) and delivered really high-quality work built to last. We definitely added value to our home during this rebuild, and I'm so grateful to Pablo and his team for that. We would definitely work with BuildBak again!"
Very professional and high level work.
I can’t recommend buildbak enough. From the very first conversation through the final walkthrough, everything was handled professionally, honestly, and with exceptional attention to detail. Communication was outstanding—they kept us informed every step of the way, showed up when they said they would, and delivered exactly what they promised. The quality of the workmanship exceeded our expectations. The crew was respectful, hardworking, and kept the job site clean throughout the project. It’s clear they take pride in their work and genuinely care about customer satisfaction.
Erik was extremely helpful from beginning of the project to end. Like anything, we had hiccups, but Erik was always responsive and customer focused. Very positive experience.
Erick (project manager) and Kamilo (employee who did work in my home) did a great job at repairing my home after a pipe burst from an upstairs neighbor. Erick was extremely easy to work with, patient and understanding especially with all of my questions. Kamilo did an Amazing job with all of the repairs that needed to be completed! Although I hope to never to have another pipe burst, I would feel comfortable using BuildBak again!
