Plattypus is a Canton, Massachusetts general contractor built around one kind of job: the gut renovation. Its BBB profile states 30 years in business, and Houzz describes the company as run by Kevin Platt with more than 25 years of experience — the reviews on file back that up with the kind of work that requires it. In a 2017 review, a customer described Kevin's team replacing a condo's building foundation, walls, floors, and stairs along with all of its plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems, managing a complicated permitting process along the way. Another 2017 review said the company rebuilt a Boston condo down to the studs, stayed on budget and on time, and handled difficult building neighbors with professionalism while installing a new kitchen, bathrooms, and custom millwork. A 2016 reviewer who hired the company repeatedly over five years — a new kitchen, a roof deck, a gate, built-in cabinets — called it consistently timely and professional across every job, and another 2016 review credited it with a well-planned addition, remodeled kitchen, and new bathroom at a fair cost. Worth knowing before calling: a 2010 Massachusetts court case named the company as a defendant, alongside the building's owner, in a commercial contract dispute brought by a glass installer over a downtown Boston renovation project — how it was resolved isn't stated, but it's worth asking about. And the written reviews on file all date to 2016 and 2017, so it's worth asking for a couple of recent references before booking. This looks like the right call for a homeowner or condo owner planning a full-scope renovation — foundation work, room-by-room rebuilds, additions — rather than a single quick fix. Confirm current pricing and availability, and ask what's changed on the team since those older reviews were written.
“This is a commercial contract dispute involving installation of high-end glass partitions in an office condominium in downtown Boston. Plaintiff Avanti is the glass installer; the two defendants were the general contractor for the renovation project (Plattypus) and the owner of the preme-sis (Nucleus), respectively. Avanti sued for enforcement of a mechanic’s lien in the amount of $57,929. The defendants counterclaimed for breach of contract and violation of Chapter 93A. The case was tried to the bench July 26-27, 2010. Following post-trial briefing the court finds and rules as follows with re”
Kevin performed a major renovation of our condo, including replacing the building foundation, walls, floors, stairs, and all plumbing, electrical and mechanical services. Kevin managed a complicated permitting process and scheduled the construction so there was not a single down day waiting for a trade to be available. Dietrich, his partner and onsite supervisor, has a great eye for design and an amazing attention to detail--he stripped antique molding from various places to frame a new door to perfectly match an original just a few feet away. Dietrich helped us adjust the layout in a few places that made a big difference in our available space. We have gotten numerous compliments on the quality of the work from friends with renovation or construction experience. Plus, Kevin and Dietrich come over immediately to fix even the smallest problem (mostly us not understanding how to work something). We lived in the unit for part of the time during the work. Not only were all the team members friendly and respectful, but they left such a positive impression on our toddler that he still asks for them by name and says he misses them. We would highly recommend Kevin and his entire team. Kevin is the most honest, fair and conscientious contractor you will ever come across. We love our home and it was a joy to work with them.
Plattypus rebuilt our condo in Boston down to the studs. They remained on budget and on time, and also handled our very cranky building neighbors with class and professionalism. From installation of kitchen and bathrooms to custom-designed millwork and cabinetry, we loved our new home and the ideas that Kevin Platt and his crew contributed to the project. Construction/renovation can be a painful process by nature, but when you wrap it up still loving your contractor, that says something! We needed smaller projects completed at our next home, but no job was too small for Plattypus. When our soon-to-be-born child's room developed ice damns two weeks before the due date, the Plattypus team moved quickly to restore the nursery to usable condition with time to spare before the birth. Highly recommend Plattypus for any construction jobs.
We have used Plattypus for numerous projects over the last five years, including big ones like a new kitchen and a new roof deck, as well as smaller ones like a new gate or new built-in cabinets. In all cases we have been very happy with both the timeliness and professionalism of the process as well as the end result.
Kevin and his team did a wonderful job on our house, with an addition, remodeled kitchen, and new bathroom. The plans were done right, the costs were fair, the communication was solid, and I would not hesitate to recommend him. We enjoyed having them around and would hire them again.
