A homeowner writing in November 2013 had been trying, several times over, to get Queen City Remodeling back to the house: grout coming off the footrest in the new shower, and a radiant heating system that still did not work. That is the shape of most of what homeowners have written about this Manchester, New Hampshire remodeler, and all of it dates from 2013 to 2015. The company describes itself as a 34-year, full-service outfit doing additions, basements, bathrooms, kitchens, decks, gutters and windows, with free estimates and emergency service. Eight of the thirteen written accounts are one- or two-star, and they tell similar stories. A July 2015 customer paid $2,000 for a shower that leaked, said the company could not fix it, and called without getting a response. A May 2015 customer who had a tile shower installed and a sink replaced wrote that the plumber had improperly installed the piping and went back and forth to Home Depot to correct his errors. In a January 2014 letter over a $6,800 bathroom renovation, a customer cited "poor communication and follow up, along with some workers unable to do the job." An October 2013 customer was left with a bathroom still in demo mode and unusable — rubble on site, walls unfinished — after two days of work. The earlier stages of a job often went better than the work itself. On an $11,000 job in October 2013, the owner personally gave the quote, came in third lowest of six bidders, and talked through schedule and technical details well; a February 2014 customer said the man who evaluated the job was knowledgeable and came out on a weekend, before calling the project itself a horrible experience. Individual trades drew praise too: a September 2013 customer who judged the overall quality substandard said the electrical and plumbing had been done well. The small, bounded jobs are where customers came away happy. A September 2013 homeowner used a six-hour wood-rot coupon and had the rotted wood around a window replaced with good material and sealed, and was impressed with the result; a July 2015 customer summed up a $300 job as a great job. So: a short, defined repair is the safer ask here. For a bathroom, an addition or anything that runs for weeks, the 2013–2015 accounts describe stalled schedules and calls that went unanswered once problems surfaced — put a completion date, milestone payments tied to finished work, and one named person to call about callbacks into the contract before signing.
$300 Great job!
$2,000 The shower leaked and they were not able to fix it. I called but they did not respond. It was one of the worst experiences that we had. We called the project manager specifically they came to the house and kind of led the whole thing. I spoke to him the first time and he said I will be out soon and I will give you a call back and then nothing. So, I called him repeatedly after that and he never answered my phone after he knew there was a problem. It didn't leak for about 3 months then it started to leak profusely. I couldn't get him to come out and then I tried to seal it up with some masonry sealer that worked for a little while. Now it's leaking again. I think it was not installed properly. They put it in but it ended up having problems. The bathroom looks very good but I can't use it.
$2,500 We hired Queen City to install a tile shower. We also had them replace the sink in our bathroom. There were a few issues. The first few arose when the plumber had improperly installed the piping. He had to go back and forth to Home Depot several times to correct his errors. I'm fairly certain that we ended up paying for the replacement piping even though the issue was not a result of anything we did. Honestly, we could live with that. My main issue is the quality of the installation. Apparently the tiler was taking to long to finish our shower (he was here for about 2 days). We thought he was doing an amazing job...until the foreman on the project had him "hurry up" so that he could move on to the next job. With this, he never had time to properly grout the shower or seal the drain. The grout started to crack within 5-6 months of the remodel (we ended up hiring another plumber to reseal the drain). When I called the owner, Matt, he never returned my calls (I always got an answering machine). I got in touch with his father-in-law (Luke), who was the foreman on the job at the time (and is no longer working with Queen City) he gave me Matt's cell phone number. I actually got Matt on the phone that way. He said to send him pictures of the issues, and he would send someone out to fix it. Of course, I never heard back. I then had my husband call a few times and leave messages as well. That was about 6 months ago. You guessed it, no response. Needless to say, we are very dissatisfied with this contractor.
$189 Never finished the job and they had poor communication.
$600 I contacted the provider in advance to request the garage doors, steps, microwave, and installation of some security lighting in areas where I made clear I did not currently have any fixtures. I was told all of these would be doable by two people in one day. Everything was fine with the garage doors, the steps, and the microwave. However, when I asked about the lighting, the two men indicated that the lighting would have to be done by a registered electrician, as wiring would have to be run to the locations, and neither of them was an electrician. When I said I had made it clear that the lights needed wiring run when I first asked if all my requests could be accomplished, they were unaware that I had been told it could be done. Bottom line was that I could not get any security lighting installed. When I tried to think of something else that they could do, since the electrical work could not be done, I asked them to install a peephole in the door. Although it looks very professionally installed, they failed to ask how high I wanted it in the door. As a result, I can only see out of the peephole if I stand on tiptoes and twist my neck to be able to see as high as possible.
