Verified record
Reed Custom Carpentry LLC is a Massachusetts carpentry business, and the state's own record confirms it under exactly that name: the Home Improvement Contractor registry holds registration #195823 in the name Reed Custom Carpentry LLC. That registration is expired. It is the one thing to settle before hiring — ask whether #195823 has been renewed and check the number directly with the Commonwealth, since registration is what governs most residential home-improvement work in Massachusetts. The written record of the work itself is dated but specific. In a review posted in October 2019, a homeowner described hiring Chris to fix a decaying garage barn, build a custom enclosure under a deck, and handle several smaller carpentry jobs around the house. That customer wrote that he showed up on time, was personable and straightforward while quoting, listened well, and set out a pricing structure they found easy to understand and transparent, including a range of estimates and a warning about the unknowns that tend to surface in work of that kind. It is one account from 2019, not a description of how the business operates today. So the picture is a small carpentry operation with one detailed and favourable customer account from several years ago, and a lapsed state registration. No rating is published on that basis — a single review from 2019 is too little to weigh. A homeowner considering them for barn or deck work should ask for recent references and photographs from the last year or two, confirm the registration status, and get the pricing structure in writing, which is what that earlier customer valued most.
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from Reed Custom Carpentry. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
A typical single-level deck is 12×16 — about 200 sq ft.

We hired Chris to help fix a decaying garage barn, create a custom enclosure under a deck and fix some small carpentry projects around the house. Chris showed up on time, was very personable and straightforward during the quoting process. He has a very pragmatic attitude to work and is a great listener. I found his pricing structure very easy to understand and transparent. He provided a good range of estimates and provided some guidance about unknowns which often rear themselves during such work. After work began on the barn it soon became evident that we had some structural issues due to rot and ant damage because of a poorly installed sliding door directly over a structural joist. Chris has the experience to understand what should be done and did a great job to resolve the issue in the most cost effective and safe way. Contractors in general doing such work can often over-index on 'what needs to be done' in order to make more money. However, I found Chris' approach to be very honest and practical. Regarding the carpentry work, I'm very pleased with the results. He has a great attention to detail and put together a great structure under our deck that does the job, looks great and has a high attention to detail. Chris had some methods to keep such a structure cost effective, while maintaining good air flow to prevent future rot. Chris also repaired a number of other rotting trim boards, deck boards, and repaired our basement door weather strip. Throughout the process Chris was always on time, kept the project site clean and safe, and got in touch as soon as a project turned up gremlins. Will hire again!
