That is the shape of this design-build firm's public reputation: uniformly positive, thick with specifics — and, the part worth knowing up front, a few years old now. The company works as a pair. Refined Renovations builds, Refined Home handles the interiors, and the jobs people hire them for are the big ones: gutting a first floor, expanding a kitchen into the dining room, adding a mudroom. Houzz lists them at 64 Bartlet Street in Andover with 54 posted projects and a 5.0 average across 53 ratings. The BBB, which grades the business A+ though it is not accredited, has it registered at 16 Upton Drive in Wilmington and operating since 2004 under owner James C Buhrer. What customers describe holds steady across the years. A homeowner writing in March 2023 gutted and expanded a kitchen, dining room and mudroom, and singled out having one designer, Ashley, as the point of contact the whole way through. In October 2022 another chose the company on the recommendation of neighbors and friends, then gutted everything but the bedrooms and full baths. Older houses come up repeatedly: a January 2022 reviewer wanted the historic integrity of an 1857 home kept intact, and two December 2021 accounts describe an Andover house over a hundred years old and another historic Andover home where the kitchen was renovated and a bathroom gutted while the interior designer worked through the rest of the rooms. A December 2021 reviewer put the point about billing bluntly — the design changes came without the usual nickel-and-dime — and a December 2020 client said the job landed on time and within budget. Two things to settle before calling. The scale is high-end: Houzz puts typical job cost between $250,000 and $2,000,000, so this is whole-house work rather than a single-bathroom refresh. And on credentials, Houzz lists construction supervisor number CS-103657 for the company — that is the directory's entry, not a state-registry confirmation, so ask for the licence and registration in writing. If you are planning a full renovation around Andover and want design, construction and interiors coming from one team, they are a serious candidate. Ask what they have finished since 2023, because that is where the written accounts stop.
We used Refined Renovations for a major home project to gut and expand our kitchen, dining room and mudroom. Jim and our designer Ashley really listened from the get go and came up with a couple design concepts that were stunning and really hit on what we were looking for. Having Ashley as our main point of contact throughout the project saved us so much time and made the process seamless. For the execution Tim, Leo and their teams were very professional throughout and do amazing work. We are so happy with the final outcome and would certainly recommend using Refined!
The Refined Renovation team is A+ across the board. Not only do they deliver high-quality design and results, but they are wonderful humans to work with. We renovated the entire interior of our home, which is a pretty stressful endeavor, and not only do we LOVE every space in our home, but we still love them! I've worked with A LOT of contractors, and to be able to say that is extremely rare. From design to build team, and everything in between, we could not have been in better hands than we were with Jim, Ashley, Austin and the rest of the Refined team. I HIGHLY recommend them!
We selected Refined Renovations for our home reno based on reviews of local neighbors and friends. We wanted a company that did it all ~ from design to build and the interiors...and boy did we get that! We gutted the house with exception of bedrooms and full baths, re-worked the space we had on the entire first floor (kitchen, dining, half bath and laundry, entry way, family room, staircase, built a pantry and added a mudroom) and built a bonus room upstairs. The vision was completely driven by the Refined team. Right from the get-go we could tell they had great ideas for what our house could be. Nothing we could have imagined ourselves! We moved out of our house for 6 months, but were generally local and able to stop by often. The contractors (Patrick, Julio and team) were reliable, respectful and dedicated to the project the entire time, often even working on the weekend! They kept things tidy under the circumstances and I am so very appreciative of that! We trusted them 100% in the house and could tell they are true professionals. Our designer and project manager Ashley took time to not only "see" our house, but also hear what was important to us. She did an incredible job along the way to honor the contemporary/modern style of our home, but also incorporate aspects that met our family needs and style as well. We really let Ashley come up with the design ideas she had in mind and went with them, and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. She pushed us out of our comfort zone and showed us some more modern ideas that we would not typically select ourselves, but it all makes so much sense! I truly can't believe this is my house. The transformation is unbelievable. Ashley is simply the best! As the project nears completion, I'm filled with gratitude for the entire team - Jim, Ashley, Tim, Patrick, Julio, Ethan, Connor....there were so many people who helped! THANK YOU ALL!
We HIGHLY recommend Refined Renovations. We could not be happier with the renovation they recently completed at our home. We were immediately impressed with Jim's vision during the initial walk through. We were increasingly impressed as we worked with the Refined team as they brought the vision to life. We appreciated collaborating with our talented designer. The craftmanship was top notch. Everyone on the project team, from demolition to finish, was friendly and respectful. Our expectations were exceeded from initial design through the completion of the punch list. We feel fortunate to have worked with them. We can't wait for Phase 2!
Our goal was to find a contractor that understood our vision and could develop a clear, concise plan to achieve our renovation goals with the full design and construction resources. Refined Renovations was that team able to work closely with us from conceptual design to completion so we could maintain the historic integrity of our home that was built in 1857. Not something just any contractor can accomplish, especially during these trends and economic conditions. The team at Refined Renovations, LLC not only achieved this goal – they exceeded it.
