Richard's Fuel & Heating says it has been in business for 60 years, and its website lists a service area that includes Easthampton, Northampton, Holyoke, Westfield and Southwick. On the Better Business Bureau, the company describes offering air conditioning repair, installation and maintenance, heating system repairs, oil delivery and ductless mini split installations. A recent customer whose furnace and A/C unit were 24 years old and had stopped functioning says Richard's came out the same week, explained that the job was a straightforward swap-out, and sent an estimate of $10,897 before the week was over, less than half of the $23,000 first estimate the customer had received. The installation was scheduled within two weeks. That customer says the crew cleaned up after themselves and handled a request to move the outdoor compressor again after it had already been set in place. For an air duct cleaning job, Fritz came to the house first to explain the process and give an estimate, and Liam and Dave then did the cleaning, working 5 hours on the air ducts and vents without stopping for a break. In a 2025 review, a customer said Richard's crew handled a new boiler after an old Peerless boiler gave out, and praised the Buderus system's efficiency since it was installed. In a 2026 review, a fuel-delivery customer said the company had been sold by the retiring original owner to a longtime employee with no change to the service. That 2026 customer also said that the one time they had a minor boiler issue, the company responded immediately. A recent customer with a no-heat call on a heat pump says the technician opened the unit, called someone and closed it back up with no attempt to fix anything, and the customer was told mouse nesting had caused wire damage. About a month later that customer was quoted $7,000 to replace the unit, then had another company fix it in 2 hours for $300, and says Richard's is charging $129.95 for service the customer never received. In 2020, valleyadvocate.com listed Richard's Fuel & Heating under Best Heating/air conditioning installation or repair service.

“After 52 years, Richard’s Fuel & Heating knows what it takes to be successful in the Valley.”
Fritz came to our house first to explain the air duct cleaning process and do an estimate. We give him an A+ for his professional advise. Liam and Dave arrived to do the cleaning, we give them both A+ for a great job done. They never stopped to take a break during the 5 hours working on the air ducts and vents. All three guys should be given a bonus. Thanks again for your excellent work.
Honest, Fair, and Excellent from Start to Finish I cannot say enough good things about Richards Fuel and Heating. My furnace and A/C unit were 24 years old and had stopped functioning, so I began the process of getting estimates. The first estimate I received was for $23,000, and I was told the job would be very complex. Even getting that estimate took more than a month. A second company came out to look at the job but never ended up providing an estimate because they were too busy. I also called another company, but they could not even schedule someone to look at the job for another month. Then I called Richards Fuel and Heating, and I was thrilled by how quickly they responded. They came out the same week I called, and the person who looked at the job explained that it was actually a straightforward swap-out of the existing system. He was clearly experienced and had installed many systems over the years. He explained the plan clearly before he left and told me to expect the estimate soon. Their estimate came back before the week was over, neatly organized in a folder with information and specifications for the furnace they recommended for my home, the available space, and the replacement needs. Their estimate was $10,897, which was less than half of the first estimate I had received. Once I told them I wanted to move forward, they scheduled my installation date within two weeks. I have just written my final check to them, and I wanted to write this review so other people know what a wonderful business this is. They are honest, prompt, thorough, and hardworking, and they clearly take pride in doing meticulous work. I also appreciated how flexible and accommodating they were. At the last minute, I changed my mind and asked to have the outdoor compressor moved to a new location, which required scheduling an electrician for additional work. On the day of installation, they arranged for that to be done. I also asked to have the compressor moved again after it had already been set in place. Even though I know it was inconvenient, they handled the change kindly and professionally. Every worker was professional, experienced, and respectful of my home. The crew deserves special recognition: they were skilled, patient, respectful, and willing to go the extra mile even when I made last-minute changes. They cleaned up after themselves and did a fabulous installation. Today, during a heatwave, I am sitting in a cool, quiet, comfortable home because of the great work of Richards Fuel and Heating. As an added reassurance, when I later heard back from the second company that had not been able to provide an estimate in time, I explained that I had chosen Richards because I needed the system installed quickly. When they asked which company I had gone with and I told them, they said I would be in good hands. They told me they had known Richards for many years and could 100 percent recommend them. That confirmed what I already knew from my own experience.
No heat call for heat pump. Technician opened unit called someone and closed unit back up. Absolutely no attempt was made to fix anything. Was informed we had mouse nesting that caused wire damage. About a month later was given quote of $7000 to replace unit. Called another company that had it fixed in 2 hours at a cost of $300 to fix 2 wires. And Richards is charging $129.95 for service that I never received. That bill won’t be paid.
Incredibly honest company. Had some issues with service—it happens. They went above and beyond to solve them. And I mean above and beyond. When it’s easy for a company to hide from problems—they run towards solving them. They’ve won my business for life. I’m grateful we have a local company that is dedicated to doing the right thing even when it’s hard. Thanks Richards.
I switched to Richard's a few years ago after another well known local oil company sold out to a corporation. Richard's has been great. We typically do pre-buy in the summer and automatic delivery, and I usually stop into the office in person once a year to get all the paperwork and payment done, and always welcomed with friendly service. We also purchase the maintenance plan to include a cleaning and ensure emergency service. The one time I had a minor boiler issue, they responded immediately. The company has now been sold by the retiring original owner, but purchased by a longtime employee, and there has been no change to the great service. There aren't too many businesses like this left (independent and locally owned with great customer service). They are an asset to our community.
