In 2013 the National Association of the Remodeling Industry named S+H Construction its Northeast Regional Contractor of the Year — by then the firm had already been renovating and rebuilding Greater Boston houses for more than three decades. Alex Slive and Doug Hanna started it in the late 1970s; the company counts 45 years in business. Sarah Lawson owns it now, having joined in 2006 and bought the company ten years later, and the firm describes itself as woman-owned. A 2024 industry article said she had worked alongside the two founders for over seven years before taking over. From its Belmont base the company handles the full residential range — custom homes, renovations and additions, kitchen and bathroom remodeling, basement waterproofing, and landscaping and hardscaping — across Boston, Cambridge, Somerville, Brookline, Belmont, Newton, Wellesley and Weston. Older houses run through the work: historic restoration is one of its listed project types, and a 2020 North Shore magazine feature centered on a 1925 colonial the writer said needed only minor updating. Recent moves point outdoors and upward. The company announced a new division in January 2025, and a May 2026 announcement had it pointing to Boston homeowners planning outdoor living projects around year-round use and durable exteriors. One small thing to square: its own accounts date the founding to 1978 in one place and 1979 in another. A good fit if you are planning an addition, a whole-house renovation, or careful work on an older home in the inner suburbs. Before you sign, ask to see two recent projects close to yours in scope, confirm the registration and supervisor licence numbers that will appear on your contract, and get the schedule, allowances and change-order terms in writing.
