S.M. Brown is an oil-heat shop first. Nearly every account of their work starts at a burner, a boiler or a tank — in January 2024 a customer called because a burner wasn't firing right, and the inspection turned up a significant fault in the oil tank, replaced the next day. Shane Brown founded the North Reading company in 2014; the site says he is a local firefighter who serves in the U.S. Army Reserves, and that the business is the oil service provider to Broco Oil, run by his brother and sister-in-law. The BBB has it accredited since 2019 with an A+ grade, five employees, and Inda Brown as office manager. The trade licences Shane lists for himself — oil heat, gas heat, HVAC and hazardous materials — are the company's own statement, not anything checked against a registry here. On Google the company holds 4.8 stars across 22 ratings, and the eight written accounts run 2022 to early 2025. What comes through them is a shop that talks before it bills. A customer who called after hours in January 2024 wrote that the on-call technician and the service manager worked the problem out over the phone instead of dispatching a truck at emergency rates. In August 2024 another described taking out an old boiler, its tank and the oil still in it: Nick came to quote on site, the crew arrived on time, pulled the external pipes, damaged nothing and left the area clean. The exception matters. A June 2024 customer whose air conditioner wasn't cooling wrote that they were told on the phone they would have to join the maintenance plan to get service, that the technician sent was inexperienced and damaged a water sensor in the attic, that the $250 visit amounted to clearing debris around the unit, and that topping off the refrigerant would mean another $250 call-out plus the cost of the Freon. Pin down what the maintenance plan covers, and settle the refrigerant question, before anyone is dispatched. Worth noting too: the written accounts stop in February 2025, so the praise here is real but none of it is fresh. For an oil-heated house on the North Shore, particularly one with an aging tank, this is a shop built for that exact work. For straight air conditioning, ask harder about scope and pricing first.
Shane and his crew are fast and knowledgeable!
SM Brown serviced my very old boiler several times for a reasonable price and most recently, removed the boiler, tank, and remaining oil in the tank. Nick came out to see the site and provide a quote. He was friendly and personable and the quote was reasonable. They arrived on time, removed both and the external pipes, left the area clean and didn't damage anything in the process. Fully recommend them!
I called because my AC was not cooling properly. They told me over the phone that I’d need to join the “maintenance plan” for service. The maintenance technician was inexperienced and actually damaged a water sensor in the attic. During the maintenance, the tech noticed that the Freon needed to be topped off and he could not do as part of the maintenance. He basically cleaned some debris around our unit for $250. When I called to have the Freon topped off, they stated that it would be an addl. $250 to come out plus the cost of the Freon. This was not clear during our original conversation, I would not recommend working with this company.
I called for them to come out and look at my burner, it wasn't firing right. During the inspection they found a significant fault in my oil tank. If they didn't inspect the tank it really could've been a major headache. Came out the next day and replaced the tank. They were very thorough and professional. Left the area cleaner than it was when they got here. I won't use anyone else
SM Brown gets 5 stars not just for the work they have done at my house but also for the work they haven't done. I had called after hours about what I thought was a malfunction. The tech on call and the service manager both spoke with me on the phone and ended up saving me $$$ by not just dispatching a tech for an after hours emergency. Not all companies would do that. Every time service has been done to our systems the tech doing. The work always explains what he's doing and why. We appreciate the transparency. Long story short we trust them and highly recommend them.
