One hundred and thirty-five permits, and almost every one of them is about the outside of a house. Sean Oconnor Construction runs out of 34 Wilmarth Road in Salem, and the permit trail — siding and cedar shingles, decks and porches, stairs, fascia and trim, strip-and-reroof jobs — reads like a carpentry and exterior outfit rather than the kitchen-and-bath remodeler its BuildZoom services list suggests. The volume is real and the jobs are homeowner-sized. Twenty-seven permits came in over the past three years, weighted heavily toward 2023 with 21, and the typical permit runs around $17,000. Most sit between $5,000 and $20,000, though eight landed in the $20,000–$50,000 band and three above $50,000 — the bigger ones are whole-house siding jobs. The work spreads across eastern Massachusetts rather than staying in Salem: permits in Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Manchester, Wakefield and Revere on the North Shore, but also Hingham, Marshfield, Milton, Brookline, Roslindale and Jamaica Plain. Two of them are in Marblehead — a 2022 deck rebuild on West Shore Drive and a 2021 screen porch on Pickwick Road, which the town's records show as suspended. There is no customer voice here at all. BuildZoom carries no reviews for the company, and nothing else turned up, so the permit history is the entire picture — what he built and where, but nothing about how the jobs went, how the schedule held, or how he was to work with. The licensing is worth a direct question. BuildZoom lists a Massachusetts construction supervisor licence, CS-093403, which it says it checked as active in June 2026, and separately a home improvement contractor registration, #197136, that it shows as inactive with a note that the status was at one point cancelled. In Massachusetts, an HIC registration is what covers non-structural residential home improvement work and what gives a homeowner access to the state's Guaranty Fund, so ask him about the current standing of both numbers and confirm them yourself with the Department of Public Safety and the Office of Consumer Affairs before signing anything. BuildZoom's own page contradicts itself on this point, summarising both numbers as active elsewhere on the same profile. A note on the profile copy: the "22 years in the industry" line and the kitchen/bath/whole-home framing are BuildZoom's own narrative text, not the company's words, and the permits don't back the remodeling emphasis — one cabinet and island job in 2024 is the only kitchen work in the sample. He's the plausible call for siding, decks, porches and exterior carpentry on an older North Shore house. Confirm the HIC registration, get the scope in writing, and ask for references from the recent jobs, since there is no written customer history to lean on.
