Affinity Construction is really two businesses under one roof, run by two brothers. Michael Sheppard is the one people call for heat pumps, mini-splits and central air; Peter Sheppard is the one who shows up for the kitchen, the bathroom, the addition or the garage. The Salem, Massachusetts company says it works the North Shore from Beverly and Peabody out to Ipswich and Gloucester, its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and its BBB page shows an A+ grade with 23 years in business.
The heat-pump side is what people talk about most. A Somerville redditor wrote this July that Affinity did their heat pumps a few years back and still handles the maintenance, and a 2025 r/SalemMA commenter recommended Michael by name. The Google reviews tell the same story in more detail: in a 2023 review, a homeowner described getting several quotes for heat pumps and finding Affinity's the lowest, with the job done in two days; another from that year credited Michael with walking them through the Mass Save rebate and loan paperwork. A 2020 reviewer said two other companies had quoted about $2,900 to replace a five-year-old condenser before Michael diagnosed and fixed the actual problem.
On the construction side, a 2024 review described a full kitchen and two-bathroom renovation that ran on schedule, with Peter handling supplier and trade hiccups himself; another that year covered storm damage — vinyl siding stripped, rotted wood replaced, Hardie shingles installed, windows swapped, a kitchen remodeled. Going back further, a 2022 reviewer described adding a bathroom, finishing a bedroom and redoing a kitchen ceiling, and a 2017 reviewer said a small addition finished ahead of schedule and on budget after months of permitting delays with the town.
The Google record is 5.0 from 19 ratings; Houzz shows 4.7 from 73 reviews, the deeper pool. The written Google history runs 2015 to late 2024, so the most recent first-hand accounts are the two Reddit mentions from 2025 and 2026. Two of the older Google reviews, from 2015, are from trade contacts rather than homeowners — one a painting contractor who refers work to them.
A sensible call for a heat-pump or mini-split install where you want help with the Mass Save side, or for a remodel that needs one crew to coordinate the trades. Ask which brother will run your job, since the reviews describe two distinct operations.

First off- Mike and Peter are two people that I feel are closer to your new best friends than actual contractors. They are two of the kindest and most genuine people I've ever met doing this sort of work. I unexpectedly had to gut two shower inserts in a multi-family building. Mike, Peter, Nick, and Pederson were here literally the next day at 7am ready to go, and continued to be every day until we were done. I was never left guessing on schedule, or timeline. Their work quality was excellent, and I even had them sort out a couple other odd-jobs I had on site while they were here. Communication was brilliant, and they were very realistic with me on everything they were encountering as they went through it. They communicate well with my plumber, and even held them accountable on a couple things on my behalf. I literally cannot recommend these guys enough.
Mike has also now referred me to my primary plumber and electrician which are also BRILLIANT. Great people find other great people I guess!
Stop looking around and call these guys for any sort of construction or HVAC needs you may have!
Honestly my only complaint is that Mike is so tall and handsome that It's really hard to be self-confident when you're around someone of such stature and grandeur. He's also a ninja I am fairly positive. Be warned he only accepts payment in precious gemstones.

A number of years ago, Affinity Construction re-built my garage and did a wonderful job. I have called on Peter Shepard for a number of issues that I have had with my multi family home over the years. His brother, Michael, had taken care of and fixed my air conditioning system for years.
Due to this past winter storms, my house had some significant damage, Peter and his crew removed the existing vinyl siding and replaced the rotted wood that was found and re-sided with Hardie shingles. They also replaced some windows and remodeled a kitchen.
Peter communicates frequently and the jobs were done on time and on budget.. He and his brother and their crew are wonderful to work with and I would not consider anyone else for future projects or fixes.

Micheal and his team installed three state-of-the-art heat pump systems in my home with all associated ductwork and electrical. The whole team genuinely cared about performing honest and high quality work to the customer's satisfaction. Mike worked tirelessly to ensure that placement of all ductwork runs, registers, heat pumps, and thermostats were placed where we wanted them and not where it was easiest to install. All challenges were met with a smile and the jobs were done well with expectations communicated at every step. Mike was very knowledgeable about MassSaves initiatives and helped guide us through the process.

I can't say enough about how great the service has been from Affinity. When our furnace recently blew they were quick to the job and quick to replace. They have been managing our HVAC systems for years and we'd melt or freeze without them.
