Shanahan Electric is run by owner Tom Shanahan out of 9 Varley Road in Marlborough. Its Angi listing credits the business with 21 years of experience and describes how it works: the owner visits the house himself, provides a written detailed estimate at no cost with no travel charges, and schedules around the customer, including nights and weekends when needed. The written record is small and dated. Three homeowners reviewed the business on Angi and all three gave five stars, but every one of those reviews was written in 2011. In a November 2011 review, a homeowner who described himself as an engineer by trade said he bid the job out to several electricians and chose Tom on both responsiveness and price; two licensed electricians arrived on time, worked a long Friday to get power back before the weekend, then returned the following Monday for an additional half day to finish - all without any change in cost. He wrote that everything worked the first time it was powered up and that Tom repeated a personal commitment to come back and fix anything that went wrong. A March 2011 reviewer had first met him when he installed driveway lighting and power to a hot tub as a subcontractor on a landscaping project, then hired him directly afterwards, and singled out his flexibility in working around the carpenter's schedule. A May 2011 reviewer wrote only that the work was excellent and 'A' across the board, and had referred two other people who had the same experience. The listed scope is broad for a small shop: additional circuits for new appliances, CATV and tel/data cabling, electric heat, heat and carbon monoxide detection, home theatres, landscape and recessed lighting, service upgrades and panel changes, pool and hot tub wiring, and whole-house and exhaust fans. The thing to weigh is age. The newest written account here is from November 2011, so ask for recent references, confirm the current licence number with the state, and check that the same owner is still doing the work.
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from Shanahan Electric. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
Standard receptacle swaps — a new dedicated circuit is a bigger job ($350–$750).
Flush mounts, pendants, chandeliers — hung on existing boxes.
Estimated range

Typical electrical project around $820
Tom Shanahan was highly response via email - usually within an hour or two. He helped to work out the design issues, including coming to my house twice to review our needs before we signed on to the contact. We bid the contract out to several electricians, and Tom was not only the most response, he also had the best price. He showed up for the project, with another licensed electrician (not just a trainee) right on time. They worked a very long day (Friday) to ensure that I had power returned to the house before the weekend. The project wasn't finished the first day, and he returned the next business day (Monday) for an additional half day to finish the project - all without any change in cost. I am an engineer by trade, and fairly experienced in electrical wiring - and I am impressed with their work. They clearly have pride in their work (they even had me place a chair near the electrical panel so I could have my neighbors come over and appreciate the "best electrical panel in Northborough"!) No surprise, everything worked the first time we powered up. I decided to purchase the generator after the recent storms and many days of power outages, because I travel a fair amount and have young children at home. Tom stated several times that he is on-call for us anytime we need - that the work comes with his personal commitment (warranty) to resolve any problems should they occur, and wanted to make sure that my wife had his number in case she should need any help when I am out. Again, further evidence of his commitment and pride. I highly recommend Tom for any electrical project you should have. It was one of the best contractor/service experiences I have had.
It was excellent. Everything was 'A' across the board. I referred two other people to them and both had excellent experiences as well.
Tom, did some work as a subcontractor on a large landscaping project we undertook through Sawyer Services. He installed driveway lighting and power to the hot tub. We were very pleased with this and when we were looking for the work described above contacted Tom directly. Tom is very flexible, responsive and can be fully relied upon. He went out of his way to work around the schedule of our carpenter and did an excellent job. Would have no hesitation in recommending Tom and will be the first person I call for any future electrical work.
