What jumps out of SILMAC's reviews is how much of the work is repeat business. A homeowner writing in September 2024 said it was their fourth project with the company — a full gut of the kitchen, a new powder room, and an addition with a laundry and mudroom. Another in June 2024 called it their third. A 2023 reviewer said Joe DaSilva had simply become their go-to: bathroom, laundry room, a new deck. The jobs described are mostly the big interior kind, in old Boston-area housing stock. A customer writing in March 2024 about an 1890 East Boston house explained how the money is structured — a price for the job, materials bought separately, which they liked because they chose exactly what they wanted. On a complicated basement in an old Boston house, a December 2022 reviewer said the surprises behind the walls were flagged and explained as they surfaced rather than sprung later. Its Massachusetts construction supervisor licence, CS-105796, is active in the name of Jose L DaSilva, and the company's own home improvement contractor registration, 162604, is active as well. Houzz's profile additionally lists an OSHA trade licence and lead-safe renovator certifications for the firm. The numbers lean heavily their way — 4.9 across 165 Angi ratings, five stars from 15 on Google — but the much smaller Houzz page sits at 4.0 from three reviews, and it carries the sharpest complaint. In September 2022 a homeowner wrote that a major basement project ran far longer than expected, felt rushed at the end, left many finishing touches undone, and produced at least three problems in the months after; they said they could not recommend the contractor in good faith. A four-star Angi review in June 2023 described a deck that came out beautiful and within budget, but where a subcontractor's mistakes and omissions delayed the project and left one repair the homeowner made themselves. And a March 2024 customer on an $80,000 basement recommended them "especially for projects where smaller details do not matter too much." One more thing to weigh is timing. The newest written account dates from March 2025, so even the good picture here is roughly a year and a half old. SILMAC is a sensible call for a substantial interior renovation in an older home around Boston, particularly if you want problems surfaced as they are found rather than at the invoice. Before signing, get the finish-work punch list written into the contract and ask who is performing the subcontracted portions — those are the two places the complaints land.
