Highlights
- Exterior replacements — windows, roof, soffits and gutters in 2017 accounts
- Exact billing — a 2017 reviewer knew costs before the work
- Repeat customers — one reviewer described six or seven years of jobs
- 2019 non-performance claim — reviewer alleges money taken, work never done
- Solicited praise cluster — five 5-star reviews posted within six days
- Dated history — all six written accounts fall between 2017 and 2019
The most recent thing anyone has written about Spero Builders is a complaint. In April 2019 an anonymised Houzz account left one star, alleging the company took payment and did not return to do the work, and that it failed to appear in court. Before that, the picture is different, and it arrives all at once. Five 5-star Houzz reviews landed inside six days in early March 2017, which is the shape of a one-time ask rather than a steady stream. The jobs they describe are distinct and specific: a mother's roof, soffits and gutters finished after another contractor left them undone; a three-season room's eight windows replaced, then the rest of that house's windows across six or seven years; noisy 1940s stairs rebuilt quiet. Reviewers name Dan directly, and the 2017 accounts single out billing you can follow line by line and a crew that kept the site tidy. Spero Builders is Daniel Speropolous's Swampscott LLC, started in June 2008 with four employees, doing full-service residential and commercial work: new homes, additions, remodels, finished basements, kitchens, baths and decks. Houzz puts a typical job at $5,000 to $750,000 and shows six posted projects, including work in Marblehead and Swampscott. One thing to get straight before calling: BBB grades the company A+ while stating plainly that it is not BBB Accredited. Those are two separate facts, and the grade is BBB's own assessment rather than anything customers said. Neither profile carries a licence number, so ask for the home improvement contractor registration and construction supervisor licence directly. The written history runs 2017 to 2019. For someone hiring in 2026 that means the praise is nine years old and the serious complaint seven, old enough to have faded but not to be waved away. If the exterior and carpentry work described in those 2017 accounts is what you need, ask about the 2019 allegation head-on, get references from the past two years, and tie payments to completed stages in the contract.

This company will take your money and not return to do the work. Do not hire these people. They will rip you off. You will take them to court and they will not show up.

Our mother's house needed a lot of major work on the roof, soffits, gutters, etc. We had hired someone else to do the work, but when they didn't complete it, we needed to find some else to do the work. We hired Dan after seeing his work on one of our neighbor's houses. He soon discovered that all of the work that had been done by the other contractor had been done badly and needed to be redone. As you can imagine, we were a little nervous about having someone else do work on the house after this, especially since we are not there to monitor it. After seeing Dan do the first phase, we were completely confident that it was being done well and that we could trust him to do the work without us there. They did a great job putting a very old house back together again. We should have hired him first. It would have saved us a lot of money and aggravation. I would definitely recommend Spero Builders to anyone looking to have work done on their house.

I would not even think of hiring any other company other than Spero Builders. Dan the owner has worked in building all of his life. Aside from being honest, he is very helpful, a perfect gentleman, his crew is neat. His billing is exact you know what you are paying. If you need any construction done save yourself time call Spero Builders and Dan will take care of the rest, you will be pleased.

Dan and his crew always respectful to my wife and I never had any issue. I have used Spero builders for about 6-7 years. Replaced a 3 season room that had 8 windows then started to replace the remainder of the windows in my home and Dan has always been there to take care of us no matter how small of a job. He is a great person and his crew is as well.
