A stuck garage door, a faulty kitchen-door handle and a collection of small household repairs brought customers to Stan-the-Fixit-Man. The business describes itself as a handyman service for Northampton, Amherst, Hadley and surrounding western Massachusetts communities. Its website says it is insured and has 44 years in business. The written Google accounts date from 2015–2020. In a February 2020 review, a customer described a next-business-day visit to repair a garage door and replace a door handle. Stan offered a choice between buying new parts and reusing parts left from other jobs. The garage-door repair proved more complicated than expected, but the customer praised his patience, said they were happy with the work and described the rates as reasonable. An October 2019 customer also praised a door and lock repair and said the price was fair. Other older accounts describe help with smaller jobs. A March 2017 reviewer said Stan and his assistant arrived on time and fixed the tasks they had discussed plus a few others. In November 2015, a Northampton customer who had hired him several times said he once finished early and refunded some of the charge for his time. A June 2019 review described a different experience. That customer said an under-sink water filter came loose again two days after a temporary repair and that they hired someone else to fix it. They also reported difficulty ordering window parts after the visit. The customer said they expected a $90 charge but were asked for $180, and alleged that Stan raised his voice during the disagreement.
I hired Stan to fix a stuck garage door and to replace a faulty handle on my kitchen door. He was able to come the next business day, arrived promptly, and set to work efficiently with his helper. He offered me the option of him either buying new parts for the jobs or recycling some previously used garage door springs and door handles that he had left from other jobs. The garage door job turned out to be more complicated than anticipated, but he was knowledgeable and experienced, having done this same repair many times before. He also maintained patience and good humor even though the job was trying. I'm happy with the work done, and I feel his rates are reasonable. He was upfront about what the rates would be when I first called him, which I appreciate, to avoid misunderstandings later.
Stan is a great guy. I highly recommend him. He is prompt, considerate and did a professional job of fixing my door and door lock. I found him on Google and would call him for any other work that is needed on my home. He is easy to deal with, fair in price and is an all around pleasant person. Thanks Stan!
Very disappointed. He quoted me $90 for two hour minimum over the phone. In that two hours he should have assessed that my loose water filter under the sink needed washers and gone to the hardware store and repaired it properly. Instead he used my housemate to hold it and he did a temporary measure. Two days later it was loose again and I had to hire someone else to do it properly. Very tiny job that he couldn’t do properly and overcharged me for. Additionally he took apart the window holders that were in need of repair. And didn’t get the number off of the window. So when I called for the parts, I had to be guided as to how to find the correct numbers to give them from the window so that they could send me the parts. When I told him at the end of the job that he had told me 90 and now he was asking for 180, He became aggressive and said he never said that and raised his voice. I see from his response that he doesn’t even address his behavior at the job. I should’ve been reimbursed for half the payment I gave him.
I had a number of jobs that were too small for a specialist but way beyond anything I could cope with on my own. I called Stan. He set up an appointment for the very next day. Miraculous! He showed up on time, fixed everything we'd discussed and a few things we hadn't. He and his assistant were efficient and creative, not just looking for the most expensive option. As more problems accumulate, I'm sure I'll be calling him again.
I've had Stan and his people at the house several times for small jobs here over the years in Northampton and he is excellent. Once he finished a job early and gave me a refund on the total cost for his time. I'm about to offer him another large job. Highly recommended.
