Standard Oil of Connecticut sells heating oil and propane delivery, including automatic heating oil delivery, according to its own website, and says it has been in business 113 years. The site lists Bridgeport, Stamford, Norwalk, New Haven and Hartford among the places it serves. A customer of almost 26 years said a technician showed up within 15 minutes of a call on a Saturday morning for an A/C emergency. A 2026 customer said Austin hauled the hose 100+ feet up the hill and across deep snow to finish a delivery when the steep drive was too slippery for the truck. A 2026 customer wrote that oil was delivered at 8am, less than 12 hours after an emailed request. In a 2025 review, a customer said they called at 8am about no hot water, a technician was at the house by 9am, and the furnace was repaired by 10am. A 2026 customer said the company claimed two oil deliveries to their house that never happened, and that no one came for a furnace service appointment made three months earlier. A 2026 customer on an auto-fill contract said the tank was on empty and the company showed no urgency about an expedited delivery. A 2025 customer said Standard Oil showed up unannounced and delivered oil they had not requested. A recent r/Connecticut commenter wrote, "Whatever you do avoid standard oil at all costs." A 2025 r/norwalk commenter said the service had been good but found the company expensive. In a March 2026 r/Connecticut thread, a commenter said the company's spot rate was way too high compared with other companies and called its annual service contract insanely expensive.
“Whatever you do avoid standard oil at all costs.”
“I actually asked the owner of standard oil about this when I met him. Almost no oil spilled and the truck was repaired and put back into service.”
“I just switched to Standard Oil $3.01 locked rate.”
“The spot rate of standard oil itself is way to too high comparing to other companies plus their annual service contract is insanely expensive.”
“I switched from standard oil to HiHo through the coop. They were significantly lower than standard.”
“a Standard Oil heating oil delivery truck roll down a Wilton driveway and over the edge of a hill into a glade of trees”
“In Standard Oil of Connecticut, Inc. v. Administrator, Unemployment Compensation Act, SC 19493 (March 15, 2015), the Connecticut Supreme Court expanded the applicability of independent contractor status under the “ABC test,””
“finding that an employer is not required to pay unemployment contribution taxes for workers who contractually install heating and security systems in residential homes because they are independent contractors, not employees.”
As far as and oil supplier they are fine. I have never used a company with such a rude customer service
We were commercial customers , and were very satisfied with our delivery service, and pricing, for our commercial property in New Milford… we own several commercial properties in CT, and the daily goings on, vendors, billing accounts, etc, for each of them do tend to get confused … I am the only person that handles the day to day operations for my husband… this can be overwhelming, and mistakes are made from time to time… I had lost track of payments to SO, because the invoices and delivery tickets were being mailed to the property address at first, rather than our mailing address…. A tenant sent them to me, then I updated this with SO… some phone calls that were made to me resulted in a failure to reconnect on my part…I will freely admit that this is on me, but I did not appreciate the strongly worded letter sent to us via certified mail… I have never received a letter worded in this way in attempt to collect a debt, which read in part: “We hope this helps you to realize how seriously we view this matter. We also want you to know that a lot of unpleasant experiences can be easily avoided if you cooperate in paying your account.” A company can choose to send any type of messaging to their customers who owe them money as they see fit… This seemed too personal and very condescending on their part. Our account, which I am sure was not the only one delinquent with the company (two payments, through my recollection), was cancelled. I called to arrange to pay the full balance in two parts, and was told that I could try to have the account reinstated , but there was no guarantee…. The woman I needed to speak to, and left a few messages for (I will not name her out of courtesy), was on vacation, and it took couple of weeks for her to return my call… When I returned her voicemail today, which was left 2 days ago, I was told that because of our payment history, could not have the account reinstated. I had hoped that because we were newer customers, that we might be able to have it reinstated as a courtesy, but I was assured not…. Again, I will admit that the mistakes were on my part, but I did not appreciate the way the company handled the entire thing… I’d also like to add that SO does not offer online payments or autopay for their commercial accounts… with several properties in our ownership, this is essential and makes things easier and less confusing…May I suggest that SO start offering online payment services to their commercial customers? With all of this said, we had no issue with our pricing and delivery , and we are thankful for that… I hope that Standard oil will rethink the wording of their communication, and procedures as well, when trying to collect debts from customers … Thank you
Joe came out to service my A/C unit. He was professional, friendly and helpful. He represents what has been our experience with Standard Oil for over 20 years and counting...
We have been clients of Standard Oil for almost 26 years now. Recently we had an emergency with our A/C. The technician showed up within 15 minutes of the call on a Saturday morning! Their staff is always professional and courteous and their work over the years has been nothing but perfect. I appreciate the training they give their staff not only from a technical standpoint but also from a customer service view as well. I would highly recommend Standard Oil for all of your heating and a/c needs.
Updated June 5th (3 stars): A rep named Darryl Schneider reached out to me to address my concerns. He addressed most of them and did what he could regarding my experience with Standard Oil. I will continue with them for a bit longer. I still find the Standard Oil a bit skeevy because they continue to hide the Daily Rate oil pricing "because of the war". Why hide the daily pricing? Are we supposed to be ok with only finding out the price of oil until after it's delivered and we get the bill? Darryl said he would bring it up with management but I think it's being deceptive that they still haven't fixed it still. Original Review (2 stars) The furnace service has been fine, nothing to complain about, nothing to write home about. Furnace tuneups need to be scheduled several months in advance, the techs were friendly and adequate. I did not ever need emergency service so I have no comment. My issue is with pricing. Standard Oil has been always on the pricier side of things. You need to pay an enrollment fee to be allowed the privilege to buy oil from them at a HIGHER fixed price compared to other suppliers. Normally its $0.30-$0.70 cents per gal more expensive. And I get that oil prices are high these days but my last oil delivery bill at the floating daily rate was about $1.00 more expensive than other options. They're really getting mileage out of "the oil prices are high right now" excuse! Thanks for the ripoff, I'm cancelling service now.
