Steve Nutter and Son Cabinetry & Specialty Flooring is a small, family-run flooring, cabinetry and finish-carpentry business based in East Falmouth, operating on Cape Cod since 1978 under owner Steve Nutter, a licensed Massachusetts Construction Supervisor (CS-025727) and NWFA-certified flooring inspector. Steve's son Ben works alongside him on installations and finishing. The written record on file is a small but detailed set of 2019 reviews, all five stars, that consistently praise the same things: careful hardwood floor refinishing on a challenging 100-year-old farmhouse restoration, custom cabinetry, and finish carpentry including stair building. One reviewer, herself experienced hiring contractors on four of her own home-building projects, called Nutter a 'gifted' master of floors and finish work. Another flew him across the country to California for a hardwood floor installation rather than hire an unfamiliar local contractor, describing him as a Master Carpenter who solves problems other carpenters can't. Google shows a matching 5-star average across 3 ratings. His Massachusetts Construction Supervisor license is registry-verified and active, held under Steven F Nutter — a direct match to the business owner, not a borrowed or unrelated credential. He also carries NWFA Certified Installation, NWFA Certified Sand & Finish and Flooring Inspection, Bona Certified Sand and Finish, and Master Pergo Installer certifications, self-reported on his Houzz profile alongside a listed license number that matches the state registry. BBB lists the business (not accredited) with an A+ letter grade; that A+ reflects BBB's own scoring, not membership or accreditation status. Before booking, it's worth asking about current availability and recent project examples — the written reviews on file date to 2019, so ask directly about work completed more recently and current lead times. The BBB and Houzz listings describe a broader remodeling, renovation and painting practice alongside the flooring and cabinetry work, so confirm which of those a specific job would fall under. For homeowners on Cape Cod needing hardwood floor refinishing, custom cabinetry, or finish carpentry from a small, credentialed, owner-operated shop with a genuine multi-decade track record, Steve Nutter and Son is a strong, verifiable option — just confirm current scheduling and recent references directly, since the public review trail is thin and dated.
My wife and I purchased a 100 year old farmhouse in need of a lot of work. We came to the point in our project for the beaten worn and stained hardwood floors needed attention. We were not sure if they could be saved but after only a hour or so of Steve and his team being at the house I knew we choose the right team. The 50+ years of abuse and neglect were gone! Before even applying any sealer or urethane I was amazed at how the floors and the house had transformed. Ben, Steve's son had promptly returned the following days to apply 2 more coats of urethane..wow the floors look brand new!!! Steve and his team of craftsman are the best at what they do, they were on time, very fair with price and most importantly a pleasure to work with. Highly recommended!!!
I was raised in a house of Cabinet makers, roofers, framers. My husband and I have had the pleasure of general contracting 4 homes of our own. That experience offered many working relationships with skilled artisans. We choose Steve Nutter to do our hardwood floors in our last home in Falmouth. We were taking on a challenging project 100 miles away from home, family and familiar workers. It quickly became obvious to us that we wanted this gifted gentleman, master of floors, finish, including stair building to be much more involved in our building. Steve made us feel confident and comfortable in an unfamiliar location. His direction was knowledgable, unpressured , and cost conscious! Steve’s pricing was competitive though his finished product was always superior. He successfully, timely and creatively completed our project above our expectation! In a few words Steve is a gentleman, a gifted trades person, creative, competitive and reliable! We have OFTEN referred him to others! Always successfully!
Steve Nutter is a Master Carpenter in every sense of the word. I first encountered his steady hand and keen eye when I brought him in to fix a series of errors another carpenter made. I was amazed watching him work and immediately recognized he didn’t even have to think very hard to solve a problem that completely vexed the carpenter before him. I later moved to California. When we were remodeling our house and installing hardwood floors I flew him out to do the work rather than toss a coin with an unknown. Again, I watched, amazed at he figured out creative solutions to things while thinking on his feet and thought of things that greatly improved my vision for what I wanted to do. I just brought him back to the airport last week after flying him out to Oregon to consult on remodeling a home and adding new floors to an Inn on the Oregon Coast. He saved me thousands of dollars in the process and came up with a plan and found the materials for me and was an absolute pleasure to have with us. I am grateful to have found Steve. He is a rare bird in this world - shows up on when he says he is going to, gives a fair and reasonable estimate and comes in on time and on budget, has a network of people he knows and has worked with for decades of similar caliber, and most importantly does stellar work. You cannot go wrong.
