Szathmary Construction

Szathmary Construction is Steven Szathmary's one-person Massachusetts general-contracting outfit, taking on framing, additions, kitchen and bath remodeling, decks, siding and roofing according to its BBB and Houzz listings. The written record is thin and dated, and it is not a reassuring one. In a 2018 BuildZoom review, a customer described hiring Szathmary for a second-floor addition that was supposed to take three months and instead ran fourteen, was left unfinished, and allegedly cost them $40,000 that was never accounted for. A 2013 BuildZoom review from another customer told future homeowners to shop around first, describing a pattern of promises made and not kept. The one positive account on file, also from 2013 on Angi, credits the company with a quick, clearly explained fix on a smaller job. Worth asking about directly: BuildZoom lists three Massachusetts contractor licenses tied to the business -- a construction supervisor license and two home improvement contractor numbers -- and shows all three inactive, one expired in mid-2025 and the others noted as having been cancelled at some point. Houzz lists yet another license number for the company, and none of these has been checked against the state registry. Its BBB page carries an A+ grade even though the business is not BBB accredited, and its own Angi profile states 23 years of experience along with free estimates, emergency service and warranties -- claims worth weighing against how dated and mixed the independent record actually is. Given the unfinished-addition account and the inactive licenses, a firm written contract and a second opinion are worth having before committing to anything beyond a small job.
