On a hot, miserable July day in 2024, Paul Pare and his crew built a wheelchair ramp in a single day for a disabled couple who could not get in or out of their own house. The Smart House is a Henniker, New Hampshire design-build outfit that says it was founded in 2020 by Pare, who reports 38 years in the construction industry; its Thumbtack profile lists six years in business and 29 hires. Reviews run from 2022 to 2026 across Angi and Thumbtack — 4.6 stars from 20 Angi ratings, 4.5 from 11 on Thumbtack — and the jobs behind them are mostly interior work of a defined size. A June 2024 customer had an entire bathroom flipped in five days, shower tiling through drywall. In September 2023, another had hardwood flooring run through a 150-year-old house along with kitchen plumbing work, and that same month a customer described two walls opened, a ceiling redone, new floors and paint. This April, a homeowner wrote that the greenhouse erected on its foundation was put together with deliberate care. Paul is named in more than half the reviews, praise and complaint alike, usually with Jose alongside him, and 2023 and 2024 customers mention how quickly he answered a call or text. Several reviews between 2023 and 2025 mention the crew cleaning up after itself — one from June 2025 says Jose left the kitchen spotless. A March 2023 customer who wanted a first-floor laundry closet turned into a working shower, with the laundry moved to the basement, wrote that most contractors never replied or no-showed. Two customers came away unhappy, and both complaints are worth asking about. In May 2026, a $7,300 basement renovation drew a one-star review: the new drywall is shredded along the bottom, there is a large gap between it and the fireplace, and the customer wrote that Paul called one of their ideas "cheesy" during the initial quote. The other, from June 2024, ran seven months through three designs for a small addition, none drawn to the dimensions and square footage the customer needed and each one larger and more expensive than they wanted; that customer paid $3,700 for plans and says the money was not refunded. The company replied on Angi with an apology. Its Better Business Bureau grade is A-, which the BBB attributes to how long the business has been operating. For a bounded job with a clear finish line — tile, a bathroom, floors, a ramp — this is a crew that shows up and moves quickly. If your project starts with drawings, get the dimensions and square footage written into the agreement before any design money is paid, and settle up front what happens if the plans have to be redone.
