The Sullivan Company has been fixing and building things around Newton since 1988 by its own account — though BBB records put the founding a bit earlier, in 1981, with incorporation following in 1988, for 45 years in business under Paul Sullivan. Back in 2013, a National Association of Home Builders awards write-up named Sullivan Advocate of the Year: Remodeler, and the firm has also picked up a Chrysalis Award for remodeling work. What actually shows up across the reviews isn't kitchen tear-outs — it's doors, trim, and carpentry repair, the kind of work that keeps an older house running. In a 2025 Angi review, a customer said a technician got a hundred-year-old door handle and lock working again and recommended him; a 2025 Thumbtack review described the crew replacing a storm door and being detail-oriented about it. A Thumbtack customer from 2023 said the company handled both small repairs and two larger condo renovations over several years and kept coming back because the work stayed on time and on budget; another, also from 2023, said Sullivan built their carriage house and has maintained the home since 2006. In a 2024 Angi review, one homeowner described the crew tracking down parts for a discontinued sunroom roof and getting the installation done without a leak since. Not everything has gone that way. In a 2025 Angi review, a customer said a door-installation job quoted at about a week actually took two months, with inconsistent scheduling and workmanship, and a door knob that came loose afterward — worth asking about if a firm timeline matters for your project. On the credentials side, the Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+ rating with no complaints on file, and BuildZoom ranks it in the top 1% of Massachusetts contractors, listing an active Unrestricted Construction Supervisor License (CS-045660) and 101 permitted projects. Thumbtack's own page, though, shows a different credential entirely — a Certified Residential Contractor license out of Florida — for what is the same Newton business, so it's worth confirming directly which license actually covers your job. For carpentry, door repair, trim work, or a deck fix — the jobs that keep coming up in its reviews — this is a firm with real staying power and clients who call it back years later. For a full kitchen or bathroom remodel, which the company also lists as services, ask to see recent examples of that specific kind of project before signing, since the review record here leans toward smaller, precise repair work rather than ground-up renovations.

I'm really happy with the work done. Communication was always prompt and clear. The quality of the craftsmanship was excellent, and the final result exceeded my expectations. On top of that, they were courteous and friendly, making it a truly positive experience. I'd definitely recommend their services!
Got the job done as requested and for a fair price. Would hire again.
Replaced an Anderson storm door, very responsive and detail oriented. Good as new.
Mark did a terrific job getting my 100 year old door handle/lock to work again! I highly recommend him.
A job that was supposed to take a week per their estimates actually took 2 months. They were not consistent with their schedule, needed to be prompted to paint the doors, and their handiwork was not up to par and inconsistent depending on who was working on it. After they left, the door knob came off on one of our screen doors. The office door was also not properly installed; we are still dealing with the fall out from that. I would not hire them again on such an important job as safeguarding my home.
