A homeowner needed the polycarbonate roof of a sunroom replaced and found the manufacturer had gone out of business. In a December 2024 review, they wrote that the Sullivans did a lot of research to identify and find the parts, installed it on schedule, and that they have had no leaks. That is the kind of job this company gets called for: the awkward repair on an older house. The Sullivan Company works out of Newton and has been at it since 1981, incorporated in 1988 — 45 years in business by the Better Business Bureau's count, on a page it grades A+. The work is carpentry and remodeling: cabinet and framing repair, interior trim and moldings, exterior doors, wood gutters, shutters, decks and porches, and on to kitchens, baths and whole-room renovations. BuildZoom lists a Massachusetts construction supervisor licence number for the company, CS-045660, along with 101 permitted projects, and ranks it in the top 1% of the 139,240 licensed Massachusetts contractors it tracks. A January 2013 RealEstateRama item named Paul Sullivan of the company for Advocate of the Year: Remodeler, and chrysalisawards.com lists the firm as a Chrysalis Award winner. The long relationships are what clients write about. One Thumbtack reviewer in 2023 said the Sullivan Company had been a partner in improving and maintaining their home since 2006, building their carriage house and handling repairs and renovations since. Another, the same year, described a few small repairs and two larger renovations in a condo in an old building over a period of years, on time and on budget. Doors turn up more than once: a February 2025 reviewer said Mark got the handle and lock on a 100-year-old door working again, and a September 2025 Thumbtack customer had an Anderson storm door replaced and called it good as new. One customer had a very different job. In a one-star Angi review from January 2025, they said work estimated at a week took two months, the company was not consistent with the schedule, they had to be prompted to paint the doors, and the handiwork was not up to par and was inconsistent depending on who was working on it. If you own an older house around Newton with work that needs figuring out — a door that will not latch, a porch, a discontinued sunroom roof — this is that kind of shop. Get the schedule in writing alongside the estimate, and settle who is running your job day to day before the crew starts.
