Ninety-five percent of the 86 ratings on file for Universal Hardwood Flooring are five stars, and the work behind them is narrow by design: installing, sanding, refinishing, patching and staining wood floors. BBB puts the business at 85 Arlington St in Brighton and records it as a sole proprietorship started on the first day of 2001, three employees, with Nghia Tran as owner. On Angi and HomeAdvisor, the customers writing in call him Mike Tran. The written history runs long — 26 accounts from 2017 through 2025 across three sources — and it leans hard in one direction: 95% five-star, 3% four, and a single one-star in the whole distribution. Those accounts are dated now, so read them as a record of how the shop worked over two decades rather than a report on this season's crews. Two things worth raising on the call. Angi and HomeAdvisor both advertise "33 years of experience", which does not square with the 2001 start date on the BBB file — ask him to separate his own years in the trade from the company's. And those two sites are showing one identical listing, down to the same review bodies in the same order, so the 86-rating figure is a single record appearing twice, not two independent ones. BBB is a smaller signal than it looks: the file has been open since 2004, but BBB has never issued a rating because it says it lacks enough information, and the business is not accredited. That is a gap in BBB's file, not a grade against the work. If your job is wood floors — a whole-house refinish, repairs to old boards, new hardwood before you move in — this is a shop that has done little else for two decades. Pin down who will be on site, get scope and price in writing, and since Angi also lists framing and trim carpentry, be explicit about anything beyond the floor itself.

Job cost $5,000. Mike and his team did an excellent job with our floors. We came up with an excellent plan that involved a minimal amount of moving for our furniture. Mike was very easy to communicate with and was highly responsive.

Job cost $18,000. I have done a lot of home renovation projects in the past, and I wish ALL contractors were like Mike. From start to finish of this ENORMOUS project, Mike was amazing to work with. He showed up when he said he was going to show up, he responded promptly to emails and texts, and he remembered all of the little details that we discussed along the way. His estimate was accurate and included all of the components that we talked about, and then we made some adjustments to the original estimate, which were also perfectly captured. And on top of all that, his quote/estimate was one of the most reasonable ones that we received (and we got 6 quotes). He was so knowledgeable with the information and advice that he provided, and I had complete trust that he would do a superb job. We had to move out of the house while the work was ongoing. He kept in touch the entire time, providing updates regularly. I never doubted that things were going well and according to plan. He had a team of two additional guys and they were also very pleasant and very hard working. And the work that was done was unbelievable quality. It looks so beautiful - a complete transformation of the home! In addition to the flooring, we paid Mike to install new 6 inch baseboards, which was a great addition. I would recommend Mike and Universal Flooring to anyone who is considering new hardwood floors or any flooring work for that matter. We will certainly use him again in the future if ever needed. Job cost $1,270. Michael was very responsive from the get go and answered a ton of questions about how he would refinish an antique (1895) pine floor and fill in large cracks and gaps that had deteriorated over the years. He and his crew completed the job in one day, wore masks (essential during the pandemic), and left the place cleaner than before they arrived. Beautiful work and an excellent value.

Job cost $7,000. It’s always a pleasure to work with Mike Tran. He is very accommodating and he is quite fair in his pricing. He moved the furniture which saved me from hiring someone else. Mike has done flooring work in my home on 3 other occasions and his work has always been outstanding.
