W J McDonough Fence is a Medford, Massachusetts fence company run across generations of the same family — Cole, Nick, and crews led by names like Christian and Jack keep coming up by name across dozens of reviews, the kind of small operation where the same people quote the job and show up to build it. People hire them for cedar and wood-picket fences, vinyl, wrought iron, chain-link repairs and gate work, and for storm-damage fixes to fences they installed years earlier. The through-line across nearly a hundred reviews is care around the details other fence crews skip: protecting plants and shrubs during demolition and install, squaring every section, and cleaning up thoroughly — one 2025 review described the crew washing an entire driveway before leaving. Several customers describe multi-decade relationships: one 2025 review recounts replacing a fence McDonough had installed 20-25 years earlier, and another from October 2025 mentions a lattice-fence repair on a fence installed 'many years ago.' A newer customer described a complicated layout — posts set into walls and grade, shifting heights and styles — handled without drama. The written record is deep and mostly clean, but not spotless. A July 2026 review, three stars, complained not about the fence itself ('great work') but about being emailed overdue-payment notices within days of the job finishing, after a 3-week wait for the work to start. A 2023 review describes a chain-link gate repair that came out crooked and stayed that way after the customer asked for an adjustment. A couple of newer reviews mention small finishing misses — an unfinished latch hole, some splinters that needed a follow-up visit to sand down. Google shows 4.8 stars from 123 ratings, and the last six months alone brought 28 reviews with only one negative among them, so the pattern holds up as current. For a straightforward fence install, this is about as well-documented a track record as it gets in the trade; if the job involves a payment plan or a finicky gate detail, it's worth confirming expectations on both up front.
Great work! One comment. Requiring a 50% deposit is fair. BUT, when it takes 3 weeks before the work is completed, it seems unreasonalbe to e mail a bill for the other half on the day the work was done =Thursday, and again on Friday, and on Saturday, marking it over due,and again on Sunday (still marked overdue). Chill out. If you can sit on my deposit for 3 weeks, and demand payment the day the work is done calling it overdue two days later, makes it seem your company is living hand to mouth in a cash flow crisis.
This is now the second fence I have had replaced with W J McDonough. The work / quality of the fence is one of the best I have seen. The fence they just replaced was challenging given the grading, and I gave specific instructions around height and style that were matched perfectly. This family owned firm is a pleasure to work with all around. I would hire them again.
Great job, beautiful fence
I highly recommend WJ McDonough. Cole and his team were very accommodating, organized and timely. We’re thrilled with how the fence came out!
These guys were amazing. Very professional. Arrived and got to work right away. Finished quicker than expected. Left the yard cleaner than when they got here. I would definitely recommend them to anyone.
