Two names come up in every review of A & R Masonry: Joe and Kathie. The Haverhill company says it has been family-run since 1984, with Joe Ruth on the tools and Kathie Ruth handling the office and design side, working brick, block, stone, pavers and restoration on both houses and commercial buildings. The work homeowners describe is the visible-from-the-street kind. In June a customer had foundation repair done and singled out the re-pointing and the clean site afterward. In April another described a custom walkway, from picking materials through design and installation, built to what they had asked for. Earlier reviews follow the same pattern — front stairs and a walkway rebuilt, block foundation work — and the Google page sits at 5 stars across 11 ratings. That history is short in one important way: only four written reviews, from 2025 onward. Praise this consistent is worth something, but it is a thin base to judge a 40-year-old company on, so treat the rating as provisional rather than settled. The thing to raise on the first call is the licensing. The company's site says it holds an unrestricted Construction Supervisor license and a Home Improvement Contractor registration, but the Massachusetts registry shows HIC registration 191306 as expired. HIC registration is what gives a homeowner access to the state's Guaranty Fund on a residential job, so ask directly whether it has been renewed and get the current number before signing anything. They are a sensible call for masonry and hardscape work where the finish is the point — walkways, stairs, patios, re-pointing, restoration — across Haverhill, the Merrimack Valley, southern New Hampshire and, by the company's own account, Greater Boston. Confirm the registration status and get the scope in writing, and the reviews suggest the craftsmanship side takes care of itself.

A work ethic that you just can't find anymore. A & R Masonry redid my front stairs and walkway. I can not say enough about Joe and Cathy's work ethic and attention to detail with this project. My stairs and walkway look amazing. It transformed how the front of my house looks. Cathy and Joe really spent a lot of time talking with us to understand what we were trying to accomplish. They offered suggestions on what might look nice and sent us pictures of various ideas that could work. Cathy was fantastic, also helping with landscaping ideas around the new walkway. When they opened up the stairs, they found that the existing stair core was in much worse shape than originally thought. Unlike most out there these days, they did not try to take advantage of the situation and price gouge us. They are honest, reputable people who did an amazing job and I would hire them again for any future projects.
