A1RE

A1RE is the uncommon small builder where the architect is a partner. Mónica Gonzalez leads the design side, Juan Wulff runs the building side, and the two founded the Newton Upper Falls firm together. By its own account it works on single-family homes across the western suburbs — Newton, Needham, Wellesley, Weston, Lexington and their neighbors — handling renovations, additions and the occasional new house from drawing to finish. The strongest outside signal is awards. The firm says it took a PRISM Gold from the Builders and Remodelers Association of Greater Boston in 2023 and again in 2025, plus a 2024 Silver for Growing Shade, a community shade structure built with Alsar Atelier; its Houzz profile lists the same awards, and an architecture publication credited A1RE in 2024 with building that community room. What homeowners have written is thinner: 5 stars from six Google ratings, four of them with text, all posted within about a month in early 2025. The most detailed describes an almost 80-year-old house and strict local construction rules — one bathroom gutted and rebuilt, a second bathroom added, the mudroom expanded and a new laundry room created — with the two partners credited for working through the problems as they surfaced. Another 2025 customer built out an attic from scratch. An out-of-state owner wrote about both the construction and the ongoing upkeep of a house they don't live in. Two things to settle before signing. The Massachusetts Construction Supervisor License is the firm's own statement rather than something confirmed against the state registry, so ask for the number and check it. And the written record is short and clustered in one stretch of 2025, so ask for references from jobs finished since then. The fit is a homeowner in the Newton–Needham–Wellesley belt who wants design and construction under one roof and cares about the drawing as much as the framing.
