The call that keeps coming up in Alves Fuels' reviews is the one nobody plans: a water tank that let go overnight, heat that quit in late December, an air conditioner that died in a heat wave. This is a Ludlow fuel-oil and propane company that also installs and services heating, cooling, water-treatment and plumbing systems. It describes itself as family-owned and says it has worked the area since 1982 — a start date its BBB profile also carries, alongside an A+ grade and accreditation running back to 2012. Twenty-eight Google reviews spanning 2021 to 2026 lean strongly positive, and what customers keep writing down is speed with a name attached to it. A 2025 reviewer had a failed water tank replaced within roughly sixteen hours and credited Luis Vitorino by name; another that year thanked Lily for a furnace cleaning where she spotted and fixed a second problem on the spot. In January 2026 a homeowner wrote that a different company had told them their 14-year-old furnace needed replacing immediately, and that Alves checked and found it both still under warranty and working fine. A 2022 customer said the owner came out personally when their AC failed and had a replacement running during a heat wave. Two complaints from 2025 are worth reading first, and both are about what happens after the first visit. In April, a customer said a $120 silicone patch on a heat-pump leak held about three months before leaking again, and that a return trip with a small piece of rubber tubing was quoted at another $120. In December, a twelve-year autopay customer said an expired card left roughly $350 outstanding, and that after paying it in full they were told by text the company would no longer service them. A 2022 reviewer described being hung up on, and a 2022 four-star review mentioned frustration over the timing and charges on a shower leak, which Liz then worked through with them. One older item sits outside the review sites: a 2014 court filing found on the open web describes a home oil tank exploding shortly after an Alves Fuels heating-oil delivery in November 2011. That is a fifteen-year-old incident, and what is published describes the sequence of events rather than any finding of fault. For heating oil, propane, and the mid-winter or mid-July emergency, this is a long-established local shop whose customers say the phone gets answered and the truck shows up. Before committing to bigger work, get the price in writing including what a return visit would cost, and check the licence for your specific job with the state directly — BBB lists six Massachusetts licence numbers for the company, but those are BBB's own records rather than a registry check.
