Andy's Hardwood Floor Service has been sanding, laying and patching floors out of 87 Savin Hill Ave in Dorchester since 1996 — thirty years, and still just two people, with owner Andy Lam handling inquiries himself. The work is floors and nothing else: installation, repair, refinishing, resurfacing and cleaning. That is the shape of a small crew that does one thing, which usually means the owner is on site rather than dispatching a van. Nothing has been written publicly about how those jobs go. The company's Better Business Bureau file has been open since 2000 but carries no reviews, no complaints, and no BBB rating — the bureau says it lacks the information to issue one. Massachusetts also exempts floor-covering-only contractors from home improvement contractor registration, so there is no state registry entry to check either. With a two-person shop, ask about the schedule before committing: who will actually be on site, how many days the sanding and coats will take, and whether you need to be out of the house. Ask for two or three recent addresses in the neighbourhood and go look at the floors.
