Read enough of Aptive's reviews and the split shows up fast. The technicians get named — Nick, Lewis, Sindy, Chris, Joe — and praised for the same handful of things: a text before they arrive, a walk of the property, photos of every area treated. The sales operation gets described very differently. Aptive is a national recurring-plan pest control company and this is its Massachusetts service arm. The model is a quarterly contract rather than a one-off spray, and the visits themselves are what most customers are rating: 4.7 stars across 1,231 Google ratings, 213 of those reviews written in the last six months with eleven negative. A July 2026 customer wrote that Lewis sprayed inside and out, took extra care around each entryway, and the insects had definitely decreased since the first application. In June 2026 another described Sindy giving thirty minutes' notice before arrival and applying an ant gel so quietly they kept working through it. The complaints cluster in two places. The first is whether it works. Two August 2026 reviewers said they were still seeing bugs; a July 2026 customer of fourteen months said the pest population had gone up rather than down and that a cancellation request went unhonoured; a July 2026 two-star said a visit ran a fraction of the hour promised after a discount was offered for a second chance. The second is the door-to-door sales channel, and it is the sharper problem. A July 2026 Google reviewer wrote that reps came two days running, knew their name, their spouse's name and their neighbours' names, claimed falsely that those neighbours had referred them, and refused to leave when asked. That account is not isolated: through 2025 and 2026, Reddit users in Buffalo, Eugene, Memphis, Irvine and Las Vegas described the same pattern — a contract bearing a signature one poster says he never gave, appointments and bills for a service never ordered, a rep who would not leave a property. None of those posts is from Massachusetts, but the pattern is national and the one local complaint matches it. So: a large operation whose field technicians earn consistently good marks, sitting behind a sales channel that generates real anger. Pin the contract down before you sign — term, cancellation, and which pests are actually covered; a USA Today review notes the standard plans exclude termites, bedbugs and wildlife. And if someone knocks on your door, take the paperwork and decide later rather than on the step.
“I have been using active for a little bit. The guy who originally came out, promised the world and I unfortunately believed him what started off sounding like a really good idea. Started to turn when every windy day they couldn’t do a lot of stuff because of risk. This summer I have noticed more colonies than ever and they stated that it’s because there are more ant colonies and did not attempt to do anything other than put something on the side of the house. I finally had enough and called to get my stuff canceled. She said I would be charged more due to cancellation. I then asked am I really”
“That's when I found Aptive's rodent bait station on the side of my house sitting wide open with the poison fully accessible.”
“The local Aptive branch near me is very predatory in how they handle business. They lie or deceive people about how their services work, get folks to sign contracts and then over-charge and under-deliver.”
“Aptive salesmen will often claim they are in the neighborhood because one of your neighbors uses their service, and what's even shadier is they will drop the name of a specific neighbor and claim this person has been a longtime customer when they are not.”
“Saw a job opening and potentially interested in applying for aptive environmental.”
“The company's standard plans do not cover termites, bedbugs, or wildlife infestations.”
“While both companies have mixed customer reviews, Orkin offers a 30-day money-back guarantee in addition to free retreatments.”
“has faced a notable pattern of lawsuits and legal disputes tied to its business practices”
“Representative rang doorbell at 7pm Memorial Day. This is a gated community with signs that solicitation is not allowed.”
Keep showing up despite me saying I will call for next service. I still see bugs 😝
Technician is nice and the service scheduling is very easy. But so far the effectiveness is not as expected. Otherwise it would be 4 or 5 level.
Treatment applied. Wasn’t here to make observations but was called and texted which was appreciated. Just couldn’t be here
Technicians are very professional, knowledgeable, and experienced.
Nick did a great job on his service call. He called to let us know he was on his way. He was pleasant and listened to all our concerns. He walked the property to make sure what he needed to do. He finished and showed me what he had done. He sent pictures of all areas he treated (nice touch).
