Based in Truro at 314 US-6, Augustus Construction states it has been building custom homes and additions on the Outer Cape since 1984, working across Provincetown, Truro, Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Harwich. The company describes itself as a full design-build firm handling new construction, additions, kitchen and bath renovations, and historic-home restoration, with a stated focus on energy-efficient and Passive House-certified building. Houzz reviewers from 2015 to 2022 consistently and independently credit Brian Hopkins by name for managing their projects — from a 1965 Provincetown ranch remodel to a from-scratch garage-to-master-suite build — citing clear communication, well-managed subcontractors, and finished work that met budget and schedule. The company's Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor license (109408) is registry-verified active under its exact corporate name, and BuildZoom's permit records show 64 permitted jobs pulled in Truro since 2015, ranging from an $85,739 kitchen and bath renovation to a $560,000 demolish-and-rebuild. The Better Business Bureau lists an A+ grade (the business is not BBB Accredited). One 2015 Houzz review describes a kitchen-and-bath renovation that stretched from a stated 5-6 weeks to 9 months, alleging undocumented "allowance" costs and property damage; the company publicly disputed the account, citing 33 years in business at the time. Worth asking directly about current project timelines and how allowance items get itemized before signing. For homeowners on the Outer Cape planning a substantial renovation or custom build, Augustus's decades of permitted local work, a registry-verified license, and a run of detailed, repeat-customer reviews make it a credible established option — confirm current references and a written timeline given the one serious complaint on record.
Augustus was an easy first choice for a planned down-to-the-studs renovation of a 2400sf midcentury modern home on Cape Cod. Brian Hopkins was patient and resourceful, proposing a thoughtful plan to preserve key architectural features upstairs and make the most of the walk-out lower level, all while staying within our budget. We also were able to view some terrific work they had done on high-end renovations in the area, including significant home expansions with beautiful built-ins / cabinetry. Although our purchase of this home unfortunately fell through for unrelated reasons, our experience with Augustus makes it easy to recommend them to anyone contemplating an ambitious renovation on the Outer Cape.
I purchased a 1965 ranch in Provincetown, MA that was in need of remodel. I interviewed 6 contractors and landed on Brian Hopkins and Augustus Construction. From the start he exuded a high level of enthusiasm for the project. Augustus started and finished within the original time frame. With the exception of some changes that I made, the project was also within the defined budget. This was my first renovation in P-Town but not my first go-around with a contractor (renovated and built several houses). By far, this was the best experience. Brian's relationships with his sub-contractors was really well managed. His expertise regarding construction was very impressive. Even though he served as the General Contractor/ Project Manager, he knew every nuisance of what should be done and how to manage the project. I am a type A guy, regardless of this, Brian was very patient. He also appropriately pushed back on me when the was a potential challenge with something I wanted. Regardless, every time he was spot on. The outcome could not have been better. I truly trusted him throughout the project. With the above in mind, I would highly recommend Augustus Construction. I am already planning Phase II and III - so get in line!!!
We have had the great pleasure of working with Brian and his crew for several large projects on our vacation home. Brian was extremely responsive and responsible in getting the work done in a very timely manner, even using his fine judgment to make decisions that enhanced the quality and appearance of our project. Since we were mostly not on site during the construction, we were especially pleased to have a crew we could trust in every way.
We have worked with Augustus Construction on large and small projects for many years. Their craftsmanship, attention to detail, respect for their work and for their clients has led us to call them for all our home improvement projects. They may not be the lowest bid on a project, but we have found that using well-chosen materials and working with some of the most skilled artisans on Cape Cod brings the best results. We highly recommend Augustus Construction.
Exteriors (especially windows) of two rooms of my 19th Century farmhouse required repair/replacement. Augustus Construction reviewed the problem, designed/planned the repair/replacement, and performed the work with excellent results. Their special capabilities included: deep understanding of, and experience with, local homes and weathering; a positive, upbeat, understanding attitude; excellent technical skills and know-how; smooth work team interactions; and strict adherence to the agreed-on budget and work schedule. My work (relatively low-cost repair) had originally been scheduled for a winter date - one that instead brought unusual blizzard-like conditions. Despite the delay, Augustus performed the work during a busy period for the agreed-on budget and work period.
