Thirty-five permitted projects, and almost none of them are houses. Bald Hill Builders runs out of Walpole as a commercial general contractor and construction manager — the outfit that puts up the senior-living wing, the affordable-housing block, the clinic fit-out — with permits filed across Chestnut Hill, Hingham, Attleboro, Randolph, Somerville, Brookline, Everett, Cambridge and Newton, valued from $21,000 to $10.6 million. The company describes itself as woman-owned (WBE) and says founder Brenda Laurenza started it to build a better client experience. Its BBB page puts the LLC's incorporation at April 2010 and grades it A+, though it is not a BBB accredited business. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. The industry side is where the substance sits. ABC Massachusetts named the firm an Accredited Quality Contractor in July 2024, and that November handed it a merit award at the chapter's Excellence in Construction Awards for the Hebrew SeniorLife Simon C. Fireman Community expansion in Randolph. Trade press through 2023 and 2024 tracked a headquarters expansion plus new sustainability and virtual-design departments, then an expansion into Worcester announced in January 2025. The customer-facing side is thin and dated. One written review exists, from February 2017: a condo building hired the firm to manage a $550,000 common-area renovation and said it could not control the subcontractor it brought in, leaving a long unfinished punch list after being paid in full. An undated Birdeye entry reads, in full, "Stay away. Pretty hurtful people." A single Google rating sits at 5 stars. Two things to raise before you sign. Bloomberg Law reported in February 2019 that the company was contesting a four-item serious citation and its penalty — fair to ask what the safety program looks like now. And BuildZoom's permit-derived profile names Matthew Grosshandler as owner while the company's own site credits Brenda Laurenza and states WBE certification, so ask for the certificate if that status matters to your project. For a multifamily, affordable-housing or institutional job in Greater Boston, the permit history and the ABC credential are real and checkable. For a kitchen or a bathroom in your own house, its work sits in another category entirely. Either way, ask for references from jobs finished in the last two years, and get the punch-list close-out process in writing.
