Benchmark Basement Finishing does exactly what the name says — and does it enough that homeowners keep coming back for a second and third project. Ten reviews on Google, every one five stars, describe basements turned into in-law apartments, media rooms with saunas, bathrooms, offices, and even a kids' playroom with a secret bookcase door, almost all under owner Kurt (also called Casey) and a small crew that includes Ethan and Brady. The thing that comes up again and again isn't just the finished product — it's how the job felt to live through. A March 2025 reviewer said they'd worked with Casey for over ten years and had nothing but praise; a January 2026 review about converting a basement into an in-law apartment for a parent called the communication and scheduling reliable start to finish; a September 2025 review specifically called out the crew's punctuality and how clean they kept the space each day. One customer in March 2025 described a 600-square-foot buildout with a den, office and 3/4 bath, where the crew spent extra time getting custom details — a kids' clubhouse, a hidden bookcase door — right. On the business side, the site says Kurt spent 20 years as a police and port officer before returning full time to basement finishing, and the company reports 27 years in business and a service area covering Greater Boston, the North Shore, and southern New Hampshire. There's nothing negative on record to weigh against any of this — the closest thing to a concern is that the written history, while consistently positive, is still fairly recent (the reviews on file run from early 2025 into mid-2026), so there isn't yet a long public track record to point to the way the owner's personal tenure suggests. For a basement conversion — whether that's an in-law suite, a home theater, or just reclaiming a cluttered storage space — the pattern across nearly a dozen jobs is the same: on budget, on schedule, and finished with the kind of detail work (a secret door, a built-in bar) that customers keep mentioning by name.

We hired Benchmark Basement Finishing early this year to finish our basement and I’m so glad we did. Working with Kurt, Ethan, and Brady was a true pleasure. Kurt and his team are extremely knowledgeable, honest, and caring. The attention to detail they took with each phase of construction was impeccable and impressive. We are extremely satisfied with the work they did and would highly recommend them!
We had our basement completely renovated and turned into a beautiful in-law apartment for my mother, and the results exceeded our expectations. Everything went smoothly from start to finish — great communication, reliable scheduling, and excellent workmanship. The space came out incredible and feels both comfortable and thoughtfully designed. We’re extremely happy with the final result and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality, dependable work.
Kurt and the team (Ethan, Brady and all the subs) did an incredible job transforming our grimy basement that was previously only useful for storing junk into a beautiful functional living space for our family to enjoy. See pics for before and after. We gut renovated our home when we bought it almost a decade ago and in the years since we've replaced or repaired almost all of the systems and major components that weren't a part of that original remodel. Through all that we've had our share of experiences with contractors and subs. This team has been far and away the best. Respectful, communicative, attentive to detail, on budget - all the good things. For any subsequent work we need done I'll be calling Kurt and the team first to see if they can tackle it for us.
We hired Kurt and his team earlier this year to finish out basement and turn a cluttered/unorganized "storage area" into a beautiful space. The entire experience exceeded our expectations in every way. From start to finish, Kurt was extremely processional, responsive, and attentive to every detail. His crew was always punctual, respectful of our home, and remarkably clean - they left the space tidy at the end of each day, which made the process so much easier on our family. The quality of their work is outstanding. We added a full bathroom, a media room, a sauna, and more, and every aspect was completed with precision and care. You can tell Kurt takes pride in what he does - nothing was rushed, and the craftsmanship and vision really shows. He also provided great suggestions throughout the project that elevated the final result even further. It's rare to find a contractor who delivers on time, on budget, and with such a high level of quality and integrity. We are absolutely thrilled with our new basement and would recommend Kurt without hesitation to anyone looking for a contractor who truly goes above and beyond. Thank you!!
Kurt and Ethan finished 600sqft of our basement with a den, office, and 3/4 bath. They and all their subs were nice, courteous, and listened to my thoughts and feedback throughout the project. They spent extra time to make sure the special design details, like a clubhouse for my kids and a secret bookcase door, would hold up and looked great. I recommend them.
