Every review of Benchmark Basement Finishing is about the same room. Kurt — Casey to friends and family, by his own account — runs this Haverhill shop as an owner-operator, and what people hire him for is the conversion: the junk-filled cellar that comes back as a bedroom, a bathroom, a built-in wall, a bar. The company says it works Greater Boston, the North Shore and southern New Hampshire, and puts its experience at 27 years of basement design and finishing. Google shows a 5★ average across 11 ratings, and ten reviews spread over three sources since 2025 keep landing on the same thing: careful work, and the same small crew named personally. A homeowner writing this July named Kurt, Ethan and Brady and pointed at the attention paid to each phase of construction rather than at the finished photos — the kind of praise that tends to hold up. Two things are worth pinning down before you call. The 27-year figure is the company's own, and the owner's own story sits a little sideways to it: he describes starting out building homes on the North Shore, then 20 years as a police and port officer, and only now returning to finishing basements full time as he approaches retirement. Those can both be true — decades of carpentry alongside another career — but it is fair to ask how many finished basements he has actually delivered, and to ask to walk through a couple. The reviewed history is also young. Ten reviews, all from 2025 onward, is a real pattern but a short one; there is no long tail of older jobs to check against. If your project is a basement — framing it out, dropping in a full bath, a media room, a bar — this is a small, owner-run outfit whose customers describe the owner himself on the job rather than a rotating crew. Get the scope and schedule in writing, and ask for addresses of recent basements you can see in person before you commit.

We hired Benchmark Basement Finishing early this year to finish our basement and I’m so glad we did. Working with Kurt, Ethan, and Brady was a true pleasure. Kurt and his team are extremely knowledgeable, honest, and caring. The attention to detail they took with each phase of construction was impeccable and impressive. We are extremely satisfied with the work they did and would highly recommend them!

We had our basement completely renovated and turned into a beautiful in-law apartment for my mother, and the results exceeded our expectations. Everything went smoothly from start to finish — great communication, reliable scheduling, and excellent workmanship. The space came out incredible and feels both comfortable and thoughtfully designed. We’re extremely happy with the final result and would highly recommend him to anyone looking for high-quality, dependable work.

Kurt and the team (Ethan, Brady and all the subs) did an incredible job transforming our grimy basement that was previously only useful for storing junk into a beautiful functional living space for our family to enjoy. See pics for before and after. We gut renovated our home when we bought it almost a decade ago and in the years since we've replaced or repaired almost all of the systems and major components that weren't a part of that original remodel. Through all that we've had our share of experiences with contractors and subs. This team has been far and away the best. Respectful, communicative, attentive to detail, on budget - all the good things. For any subsequent work we need done I'll be calling Kurt and the team first to see if they can tackle it for us.

We hired Kurt and his team earlier this year to finish out basement and turn a cluttered/unorganized "storage area" into a beautiful space. The entire experience exceeded our expectations in every way. From start to finish, Kurt was extremely processional, responsive, and attentive to every detail. His crew was always punctual, respectful of our home, and remarkably clean - they left the space tidy at the end of each day, which made the process so much easier on our family. The quality of their work is outstanding. We added a full bathroom, a media room, a sauna, and more, and every aspect was completed with precision and care. You can tell Kurt takes pride in what he does - nothing was rushed, and the craftsmanship and vision really shows. He also provided great suggestions throughout the project that elevated the final result even further. It's rare to find a contractor who delivers on time, on budget, and with such a high level of quality and integrity. We are absolutely thrilled with our new basement and would recommend Kurt without hesitation to anyone looking for a contractor who truly goes above and beyond. Thank you!!

Kurt and Ethan finished 600sqft of our basement with a den, office, and 3/4 bath. They and all their subs were nice, courteous, and listened to my thoughts and feedback throughout the project. They spent extra time to make sure the special design details, like a clubhouse for my kids and a secret bookcase door, would hold up and looked great. I recommend them.
