Watertown-based Benjamin Construction is built for the big, complicated renovation — gutting a condo kitchen and bath, adding onto an 1890s house, or rebuilding a brownstone's common areas — rather than a quick repair call. The company says it has been doing high-end renovation work around Boston since 1991, founded by John Benjamin and run day to day by Operations Manager Matt Serreze. Its Google page shows real depth for that kind of work: 36 reviews averaging 5 stars stretching back to 2021, most of them multi-paragraph accounts of specific jobs rather than one-line praise. A 2022 review described a Watertown-area townhouse gutted from kitchen to roofline on a five-month schedule that finished on time; another from 2022 walked through a multi-tenant brownstone rebuild that untangled decades of rot and critter damage across carpentry, roofing, and masonry. A 2024 review said a leaky "hobbit door" fixed in a historic home's basement was still holding up two years later through repeated rainy seasons. Matt Serreze and project manager Jon Lyons come up by name again and again for staying responsive and working through surprises as they surfaced. The Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration tied to the business was checked against the state registry — and it's expired, worth asking about directly before signing anything. Its BBB page carries an A+ grade with 32 years in business listed, though the company isn't BBB-accredited and the profile shows no complaint history. One recent review — half-lament, half-joke — describes a specific address that's sat unfinished since before the pandemic; it's the one sour note in an otherwise consistent record and worth raising directly. For anyone planning a full kitchen-and-bath gut, an addition, or a historic-building rebuild in the Boston area, the reviews here read like people who actually lived through the process and came out satisfied — just get the license question answered and a firm completion date in writing before work starts.
Benjamin Construction is top notch. They are excellent craftsman with attention to detail and high standards. The people who work with them are always courteous, kind and focused on a job well done. Knowledgeable and resourceful when more detail or information is needed. Beautiful work and excellent follow through. We feel lucky to have done a major renovation to our home renovated by Benjamin Construction.
Lament for 58 York Terrace: 'Whenever I see 58 York Terrace I shed a little tear. Alas, when, oh when, will you ever finish work on 58 York Terrace?" Maybe it's just a crazy dream. It's been since pre-covid now! I'm sure it will look really beautiful when it's done!
I don’t even know where to begin – we had to fire our original contractor after months of constant lies, zero project management, and work that was either shoddy or never done. He left our home in complete chaos: walls half-demolished, plumbing and electrical a nightmare, and worst of all, a roof that was never properly finished, letting rain and the elements pour in and cause significant damage throughout the house. Feeling completely defeated, we called Matt at Benjamin Construction to take over what honestly felt like an unsalvageable disaster. From the first conversation Matt was straightforward, compassionate, and honest about the mess he was inheriting yet totally determined to make it right. His integrity alone brought back the trust we thought was gone forever. The quality of work Matt and the Benjamin Construction team delivered is simply outstanding. They rebuilt everything with incredible attention to detail and true craftsmanship, fixed every hidden mistake the previous contractor left behind, and installed a beautiful, watertight new roof we can finally count on. What started as a long, sideways nightmare finally moved in the right direction, and we owe that entirely to Matt’s and his team’s skill, honesty, and relentless commitment to doing the job right. If you’ve ever been burned by a bad contractor or just want the peace of mind that comes with working with someone genuinely good, hire Matt and Benjamin Construction – they are the real deal. We’re forever grateful.
We had a great experience with Benjamin construction on our major kitchen remodeling project. They are extremely professional and highly skilled. Their high standards and attention to detail that carried through the whole project from demolition to finish details were impressive. They kept the work site clean and organized, communicated clearly and frequently throughout the project, and were highly responsive to any questions or concerns that we had. They brought creative and effective solutions to technical problems we encountered during the project, which we really appreciated.
Benjamin construction was the contractor for our 6 month bathroom and kitchen renovation project in a condo in Boston. Their work is excellent - everything they or their subcontractors did is top quality. We had a dedicated lead carpenter on site every day. The project manager, who came to the site at least once a week to consult with us or with the Benjamin team, provided written weekly status reports - what was done and what's up for the following week. Both the lead and the PM worked closely with us (the owners) and the architect/designer on all aspects of the project. When there were questions or unexpected issues, they consulted with us for a joint decision on how to move forward. They did a very good job keeping the non-renovation spaces protected from the work areas (plastic walls, etc.). The worksite was tidied at the end of every day. Our building management has very specific restrictions and regulations for contractors. Benjamin Construction was able to operate seamlessly within the rules and regs - for themselves and all their subcontractors. Right from the start Benjamin earned a Gold Star - the building manager told us they were one of the best teams they had ever worked with. Our contract was Time and Materials. Benjamin provided a very detailed cost estimate up front, and a detailed calendar. The project was about 15% over the estimate - mostly from changes that we made during the project, and surprises behind the walls. The timeline was adversely affected by a couple of supply issues (outside Benjamin's control), and our changes. The invoices list details of Benjamin staff hours, individual materials costs, and subcontractor pass through. They were great to work with. I heartily recommend them.
