Big Blue Plumbing & Heating has run out of the same Middlesex Ave address in Medford since 2007, and the company says that's nineteen years of plumbing, heating, and air conditioning work across Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, and the surrounding towns. The Better Business Bureau independently counts eighteen years and has accredited the business with an A+ rating since 2009 — a rare bit of third-party confirmation for a story a lot of small contractors only tell about themselves. On Google, 54 ratings average 4.7 stars, and reviews from the past few months tell a consistent story: fast callbacks, clear pricing, technicians who explain what they're doing. In May, Stacey in the office coordinated a same-day water heater replacement that one customer called quick and reasonably priced. Weeks earlier, a homeowner with a leak in a 100-year-old cast iron stack pipe called Big Blue after another plumber never returned a callback, and Randy tracked down the problem and fixed it the same day. Another recent reviewer singled out Kevin and Josh by name as experienced and patient with questions, calling the rates reasonable — with one caveat: Big Blue doesn't do sewer scopes. A longtime customer of 15 years says the pipe work is always done clean and courteous, with prices explained upfront. The one sour note is a June review describing a $325 air conditioning maintenance visit as perfunctory — the technician swapped and cleaned a filter but didn't address the specific issues the customer had flagged beforehand. Ask exactly what an AC maintenance visit covers before booking one — that's the spot where a recent customer felt shortchanged. If a full sewer-line scope is what's needed, look elsewhere; Big Blue doesn't offer it. Its Massachusetts plumbing license, 15303-PL-M, is active, and BBB has kept it accredited at A+ since 2009 with no complaints listed on its profile. For the everyday calls — a leaking pipe, a water heater on its way out, a furnace or AC that needs troubleshooting — Big Blue has a paper trail in the Medford area stretching back to 2007, not a reputation built overnight. Before booking, it's worth spelling out in writing exactly what you want inspected or fixed, especially for a routine maintenance visit, given how the one recent complaint played out.

I used Big Blue Plumbing for AC maintenance based on a neighbor’s recommendation, but I was highly disappointed. The technician did a completely perfunctory job, only changing and cleaning the filter. Even though I explicitly mentioned specific issues I’ve been experiencing, he did absolutely nothing to address them. Charging $325 for basic maintenance I easily could have done myself is unacceptable. I would not recommend their services.

Had a water heater go on the fritz and Big Blue were quick to help. Stacey, who ran point on the phone, was so communicative and helpful in coordinating the replacement of the water heater. Price and promptness were all very welcome. Thank you!

I’ll try to make this one short because if I wrote every reason that I think Big Blue is the best, this review would be way too long to read.

Tale of woe: I had a major leak coming down the 100-year-old cast iron stack pipe in my house. A few days before, I’d called a plumber who came over and told me he’d be back after the weekend to figure out the problem. He never showed up, so I Googled plumbers and came upon Big Blue. After reading all of their 5 Star reviews, I called Big Blue and the receptionist (Stacey) sent Randy that afternoon. He did some detective work and correctly diagnosed a cracked main waste stack. Randy and Julio opened the wall to examine the extent of the crack, and it was wide and long — not good.

Randy and Julio did as much as they could do that day, and as they were packing up, I mentioned to them that I had a leaking valve in the basement — something I caused that morning. Yeah, when it rains, it pours. Julio offered to look at it, and suggested ways I could fix the leak, if I wanted to try. Ten minutes after they’d left, Julio rang my doorbell. “My conscience won’t let me leave you like that,” he said, and he offered to replace the valve. Randy made it over to the supply house in Medford before it closed, and they replaced the valve. I’m not making this up.

A few days later, Randy and Mohammed returned to repair the stack. It took most of the day to do it as the section of damaged pipe was long and the job was complicated. They did a fantastic job.

Everybody at Big Blue is super-nice, from the secretarial staff (Stacey and Linda) to every plumber I met. They are quiet, clean, prompt, very knowledgeable, and professional. If I ever have another plumbing problem, I know who I’m calling. There is a reason for all of those 5 Star reviews. Thanks, Big Blue.

I've used Big Blue a few times over the past 15 years. Just had them come around to fix a pipe in the basement. Always done right, clean, and courteous. Prices are reasonable and clearly explained. I wouldn't use anyone else!

Kevin is very experienced and knowledgeable, as is Josh. We really appreciated them answering our many questions!

Their team does good work and their rates are reasonable. We'd recommend Big Blue for anyone needing plumbing services (except sewer scopes, I don't believe they offer those)
