Christopher Caruso has been pulling permits out of 10 Driscoll Ln in Beverly since at least 2015 — 18 of them, spread across Beverly, Danvers, Marblehead, Peabody and Westford. Read the list and the shape of the business comes through: a 750-square-foot addition in Danvers, a rear attic dormer, kitchen and bathroom renovations, siding and trim replacement, a couple of commercial fit-outs. Not a specialist. A general builder taking the whole job. The company's own blurb claims over 30 years on the North Shore. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #162945, is active under the company's own name. A second registration, #128795, is listed as inactive and at one point cancelled — worth asking about, though the current one stands on its own. Where this gets thin is what customers have written. There is almost nothing. On Houzz the single review is from an architecture firm, Merrimack Design Architects, whose principal wrote in May 2016 that he had been working with Chris since 2004 on his own home and place of business and relied on him to solve difficult building issues — a warm account, but from a design partner rather than a homeowner who hired him off the street. A 2024 Google reviewer wrote that they had been ecstatic over the years, praising quality and reliability without naming a project. And Google's own average tells a different story than either: 3.0 across two ratings, meaning someone left a low score without writing a word. That gap is the single most useful thing here. Two ratings averaging 3.0 while the only readable comment is a 5 means there is an unhappy customer somewhere with no explanation attached. BuildZoom, meanwhile, stamps the profile with an alert reading 'no active license on file' and a score of 0 — a claim the state registry contradicts outright. Treat that banner as a directory error, not a finding. For an addition, a dormer, or a whole-room renovation on an older North Shore house, this is a builder with a permit trail and a live registration behind him. Ask for recent homeowner references — the written history here is two comments across eight years, one of them from a trade colleague — and ask directly about the second, cancelled registration.

I’ve been nothing but ecstatic with my experiences with them over the years. Their quality of work, professionalism and reliability leave nothing to be desired.

Chris is an extremely honest and hard working builder. I have been working with Chris since 2004 on a number of projects including my home and place of business. I rely on Chris to solve difficult building issues and he approaches every project with a positive and fresh perspective. He is my go to guy and a joy to work with.
