Central Oil is a heating oil and furnace service business. On the company website, the owner writes that Central Oil was acquired from an uncle on December 17, 1981, and that a son, Christopher, joined the business in 2003; the site describes him as a fully-licensed driver and burner technician. A 2022 article on westernmassnews.com quotes Marty Topor, owner of Central Oil: “It’s crazy I’ve been in the business 41 years, and I’ve never seen it like this before.” A recent customer said that when their furnace stopped working over the weekend, they called Marty and a tech was at the house within 30 minutes and fixed the furnace. A 2025 customer wrote that their furnace stopped running near quitting time, and that the tech was there within half an hour and gone within 15-29 minutes with a working furnace. A 2025 customer who ran out of oil said the tank was filled within an hour of calling Chris. That 2025 customer wrote that when it did not start, Chris sent techs Seth and Steve and within 10 minutes it was roaring. A 2026 customer of about 13 years wrote that the person answering the phone would not commit to a delivery date ahead of a storm and scheduled the delivery several days out. That 2026 customer said they used diesel to get through the next two days, and that a call on Monday got the delivery made. A 2026 customer seeking a boiler replacement wrote that someone was sent to the house without a call ahead and walked away after the door was answered. That 2026 customer said the owner then called and scolded them. The Better Business Bureau lists an A+ grade for Central Oil.
““It’s crazy I’ve been in the business 41 years, and I’ve never seen it like this before. I’ve seen high prices but not like this,” said Marty Topor, owner of Central Oil.”
“That’s when Marty Topor, owner of Central Oil, decided to step in and see what he could do.”
Over the weekend my furnace stopped working. I called Marty and a tech was at my house within 30 minutes and fixed my furnace. Great company and great people.
They called and got no answer, sent a guy 15 minutes later, sent him again without a second phone call and then the owner called and scolded me. I hadn't even been told they were planning to come the day they came, or else I could've been ready. I apologized but was told I was entitled since i'd be getting assistance getting my boiler replaced and I couldn't spare 15 minutes when I never actually turned them away, I answered the door and and mentioned they hadn't called beforehand and before I could tell the guy to let me throw on some pants, he turned and huffed off. I called after him as he walked down the driveway pissed off at me he refused to turn around or listen. The owner said "it was a little something called frustration" which I understood, but I tried to explain the situation and asked why they sent someone without prior notice or scheduling or even getting me to actually confirm I was home, but he didn't want to hear it. If they'd called the day before, not even 24 hours but even they'd called the night before, I could've been ready to let them in at a time that was good for them. They called me from a private number as well, so it's not like I could've responded or called them back to clarify anything, but I guess I'm on their blacklist now according to the owner. According to the Owner, they turned down a $10,000 job because they just don't like that I wasted their time after they sent someone with barely any notice and not even confirming anyone would be home at the time they sent someone and outright refused to schedule anything ahead of time and then walking away even when I did answer the door for them. I ran down the stairs without pants on and stuck my head out just to answer the door as fast as possible when I didn't even know who it was. As for the actual price, I can't even verify that's what it would've been, but that's the number the owner threw out when he called me entitled. The boiler hasn't been replaced yet so I don't know the final price and they never came in to do the quote, but the other 2 companies placing bids all called at least a day ahead of time to let me know the day and time and schedule with me. I guess business must be good to turn down 5 figure contracts without a second thought.
Well... I'm glad to see I'm not the only one having issues with this place lately. We have been customers of Central Oil for about 13 years now. In the beginning it was great. Called for a delivery, twenty minutes later there they were. NOT. ANY. MORE. I would like for the remainder of this message to be looked at less as a review and more as an open letter from one local business owner to another about how a local business is losing its focus on its customers. The way you are treating people as of late needs to be addressed and sometimes a little public embarrassment goes a long way in steering things in a more positive direction. I'll echo the sentiments of another recent reviewer because my experience was VERY similar. I wonder if we dealt with the same person... To put it plainly, the people who represent your company have become extremely rude on the phone and have now nearly left us in the cold twice in the last month alone: once over New Year's and again ahead of the bad storm last weekend. On both occasions I called to schedule a delivery with days to spare and not only would your representative not commit to a delivery date, they got irritated when I so much as asked when we could expect you. Sighing, condescension, general rudeness... nothing that remotely resembled professionalism. This past time was the worst. We called midweek before the storm and, again, the individual who answered the phone was rude and wouldn't commit to a date for delivery. When I wouldn't take "go pound salt" for an answer a second time and explained that we were close to empty and would not make it through the storm and any resulting delays in delivery this week, her response was, "Yeah, you and everybody else." Because she was annoyed with me, she then deliberately scheduled my delivery several days out and when Saturday before the storm came and went we were left to supplement with diesel to get through the next two days. With the bitter cold we went through more than 10 gallons in just about 48 hours. I even called twice on Saturday and when I once again wouldn't take being told to basically stop bothering them as a response, they lied and said we were on the list for delivery that day just to shut me up and get me off the phone. When I got home at 6:30 that night, there was no oil in the tank and I wound up making several trips to the gas station to get diesel and feed the tank in the dark and in the freezing cold. When I called on Monday I finally got someone with a sense of responsibility on the phone, told them the situation and asked if we could expect our delivery that day. It was the first time anyone bothered to even come close to apologizing (close, but no cigar) and made sure we got our delivery. It was something. At that point I was just grateful for not being treated like garbage again. You get an extra star for finally doing something proactive, little though it was. Central Oil, understand this: We are not being unreasonable when we call trying to get information out of you. We are not an intrusion on your day. We are your customers and we have options. SHOW. SOME. RESPECT. I did and you treated me like I was being unreasonable and not for the first time. Not by a longshot and not by just one person there. I'm sorry if you find your work to be a drudgery but taking it out on the customer is very unprofessional and uncalled for, especially when one is trying to be polite and isn't calling with their list of demands, just trying to plan accordingly if you can't serve our needs in a timely way. I never made any demands, I never took a disrespectful tone, I never raised my voice. I spoke to your representatives with nothing but respect. I did not deserve to be treated the way I was or to have my delivery sabotaged by a disgruntled employee with a chip on her shoulder. If my next experience with your company is more positive I will consider removing this review along with its rating. Until then people have the right to know. Be nice. Be proactive. Empathize with your customers. It's not too much to ask.
Our furnace stopped running, showing it had a half a tank. It was almost quiting time when we called to have someone come to look if possible. Within a half an hour their tech was here and gone within 15-29 minutes with a working furnace!! I've waited hours for other services unrelated and NEVER had such speedy help. The tech was polite and personalble . THANK YOU
Everybody yaps about lousy service. I can't say that about Central Energy. You call and they respond. I've been a customer for over 40 years. Yesterday we ran out of oil. I called Marty Topor's son Chris and the tank was filled within an hour. He said if it didn't kick on, to give him a call they might have to bleed the line. It didn't start. Chris sent his techs Seth and Steve and within 10 mins it was roaring. I'm telling you, nobody provides better/faster service.
