Cornerstone Chimney & Masonry works out of Weymouth, and its Angi and HomeAdvisor profiles say it has been at it for 27 years with CSIA-certified technicians who belong to the Chimney Sweep Institute of America and the National Chimney Sweep Guild. The name most reviews use for the person doing the work is simply Jay. Two of the most recent, most detailed reviews are hard to skip past: in a November 2024 review, a Cohasset homeowner and her boyfriend both describe hiring Jay for a $249 cash chimney cleaning, only to find debris poured out of the flue two days later and the damper stuck. When they tried calling, texting and emailing for the next several days, they got no response, and when the reviewer finally posted about it, she says Jay told her he had never been to her house and had the wrong Cornerstone Chimney, then had her review taken down. That pattern sits against an older run of positive accounts. In a 2022 Google review, a customer described a chimney fire that Jay fixed with a new liner, with no problems reported since. Further back, reviews from 2018 and 2019 describe on-time visits, an inspector who told one customer a full cleaning was not needed and adjusted the price down accordingly, and a cap-and-cleaning job finished quickly enough to earn a repeat customer. Both Angi and HomeAdvisor publish a 4.8-star average across 368 ratings, but Google's own page shows just 3 stars from 4 ratings — worth checking current reviews directly, and worth getting written confirmation of the job scope before paying in cash. This looks like a company with a real, decade-plus track record that had at least one serious breakdown in customer service recently; ask around locally before booking, and keep a paper trail for anything you pay for.
I would avoid using Jay as he doesn’t guarantee his work. He broke my flue, took his payment and hasn’t returned any calls, texts or emails. I was an existing customer but would recommend if you want to avoid headaches and the costs to fix what he breaks, do yourself the favor of finding someone else.
My boyfriend Jeff Kripke and I hired Jay Costello to clean our chimney on 11/11 in our Cohasset home. He charged us $249 for a half hour of work and we paid in cash. Two days later we went to open our flue to have a fire and debris poured out making a huge mess and he damper would not close. Jeff sent Jay a text and email that night asking him to come fix it. No response. The next 5 days we tried calling, emailing and texting to see if he would come to fix it. No response to either of us. I then decided to leave a Google review and within 20 minutes he responded saying he never came to my house and I had the wrong Cornerstone chimney! He doesnât know my name because my name wasnât on the service call but I answered the door to let him in and I live there!!! I have every right to call and try to get him to come back. He had my review deleted. Jeff then left a Google review which Jay responded to saying he wasnât in his database - yes your database will have Jeff Kripke from Holly Lane. My question is why when you perform a service at someoneâs home do you refuse to return calls, texts and emails from the customer who is dissatisfied with your work? We gave you a week to respond and try to fix the problem and you just ghosted us and then have the nerve to tell us you never did the work at our home!! He have the invoice with your name on it! We have now opened a case with the better business bureau. We had to pay another service to come back and fix your shoddy work. Leaving a review here since Jay is having our reviews removed from Google and claiming we are fake! Unbelievable
I would avoid using Jay as he doesnât guarantee his work even though it says right on his website that he does. He came to my Cohasset home on 11/11. I paid him cash for a half hour of work. He broke my flue, took his payment and hasnât returned any calls, texts or emails from me or my girlfriend who was also an existing customer at her prior home. I was an existing customer but would recommend if you want to avoid headaches and the costs to fix what he breaks, do yourself the favor of finding someone else. It is now 11/23 and he still has not responded to us, and keeps taking my girlfriends reviews on Google down claiming he never did work for us even though we have the receipt as proof!

Jay is the most responsive and professional chimney person I have found. I had a chimney fire and he put a new liner in and I have not had any issues since. I have a wood burning stove and even though it is cast iron, it was no problem for Cornerstone Chimney. Jay always returns phone calls, covers the area necessary and cleans up with ease. I would recommend Cornerstone for anyone needing chimney services. Prices are reasonable and if there might be an issue, Jay will tell you up front and hides nothing. Best there is around. Would not recommend anyone else.
