D.F. Richard Energy has been part of Dover, NH's heating landscape since 1932 — the company, named for founder Daniel F. Richard, still calls itself family-owned. It delivers heating oil and propane and installs and services furnaces, boilers, heat pumps and air conditioning across the New Hampshire and southern Maine Seacoast, and it's been a Better Business Bureau accredited business, graded A+, since 1983. Long-time customers describe real loyalty: a 2025 review cited 40 years with the company, another dates back to 1988. Reviewers repeatedly point to fast emergency response — a 2025 review described a technician arriving promptly the weekend before Thanksgiving when a furnace started humming, and a 2024 review said an email sent at 9 p.m. about a dead oven got a callback with the needed part by 8:05 the next morning. Another 2025 review said the company let a family pay for a post-Christmas furnace repair once their tax return came in, during a financially tight stretch. A 2023 Reddit post called the company reliable and honest, and credited it with converting a home from oil to propane and helping with mini-splits. The more recent written record also carries a real pattern of complaints worth weighing carefully. A June 2026 review described seven years of difficult transactions, frequent fees, and staff giving inconsistent information. A December 2025 review described a cold, unhelpful phone response to a failing boiler that opened by asking whether the caller bought oil from the company. A September 2025 review described billing for unexpected expenses spread across separate invoices with no advance notice, and a July 2025 review said an online meter reading showed less propane delivered than billed, with two tanks filled to only 60 percent. A March 2025 review from an eight-year customer described declining service, including a furnace air filter that went unreplaced for two years, and another from the same month described propane deliveries timed inconveniently and without warning. Older accounts describe similar friction: a 2018 review said a propane tank was removed without warning despite a zero balance, and a 2013 review said a water heater installation was later found not up to code. D.F. Richard is a long-standing option for oil and propane delivery and heating system work on the NH Seacoast, and many long-term customers describe real trust built over years; given the volume of recent complaints about billing accuracy and communication, it's worth reviewing delivery and billing terms carefully and confirming metered amounts against what's actually delivered.
“I am a fan of DF Richard. No they aren’t the cheapest, but they are reliable, honest, and I’ve always been happy with the service. They changed over my oil to propane as well. Also helped me with mini-splits.”
Honestly the entire experience of the past 7yrs with DF Richard has been shitty. They make everything transaction and interaction as hard as possible. They constantly try to charge fees for anything and everything. The staff isn't on the same page, one person says one thing and then someone else answers next and says something completely different. They do not care if you need an emergency delivery. Whoever "Erika" is needs to be fired, still no clue who she is, never spoke with her myself on the phone but anytime my husband calls he's always transferred to her?? She never wants to do her job. I am convinced she thinks her job is to give others a hard time over anything. Also last time my husband called he was being transferred to "Erika" and heard her say "No Im not talking to them. I dont want to deal with them" Literally just unprofessional to the max. Apparently if you need emergency delivery EVER do NOT use this company. They dont care and apparently using the emergency delivery service makes you enemies with the staff? They also illegally took money from our account. They were supposed to take a scheduled payment out and it failed 3x dur to the staff failing to type the correct account info, after the 3rd try my husband told them do NOT attempt to charge our account again until the others dropped off/released & they charged it AGAin that day 3 hours later, 40mins before they closed for the weekend a i am assuming they o be sneaky and try to go home and close for the weekebd before we noticed, but I got text alerts on. We orderd propange 8 DAYS AGO and still nothing, still no confirmation when or anything. Just very shitty company.
The team was fantastic before, during and still now after installation.
We appreciate Kevin's knowledge of how our steam boiler works. He explained what caused the problem and how he fixed it. Thanks for the great service!
I continued using this company after purchasing my property since they had filled the oil tank at the home for the previous owner. Unfortunately, my experience was disappointing. At the end of January 2026, I requested an oil delivery and was told over the phone that if I did not enroll in auto-delivery, the price would be a higher cost, $3.89 per gallon. I agreed, and was added to their schedule. When the invoice arrived following the oil delivery, I was charged $3.99 per gallon. I chose not to dispute it since I did not have the quoted price in writing. Later, knowing I was converting the home to natural gas and would not need much additional oil, I tried to order 100 gallons through their online portal. I was informed there was a 150 gallon minimum, which I agreed to. After the February 28th delivery, I received an email stating their truck malfunctioned and delivered 197 gallons. I contacted the company to explain that I would not have use for the excess oil. I was then told the price for this delivery was $4.09 per gallon, which was higher than other local pricing I had seen. The initial accommodation offered was a $0.10 per gallon discount. I proposed paying for the 150 gallons I agreed to at $4.09 per gallon. After further discussion, they ultimately agreed to honor $3.89 per gallon for the full 197 gallons. While I appreciate that the price was adjusted after I pushed back, the resolution required unnecessary negotiation. Pricing discrepancies and over-delivery due to equipment malfunction should be addressed proactively, without placing the burden on the customer. As a plumber who regularly works alongside D.F. Richard crews on jobs, I expected clearer communication and stronger customer service. I would recommend customers confirm pricing in writing and verify delivery quantities before and after service.
