Doherty Slate Roofing works one of the more demanding corners of the trade: slate and copper roofing, often on some of the oldest houses around Boston. The name that shows up again and again is Jason Doherty's — reviewers describe him assessing jobs personally, with several crediting his wife Liz for keeping customers updated as a job approaches and moves along. The work itself reads specific rather than generic: chimney re-flashing paired with matching shingle replacement, a garage's copper roof redone with the customer asking for the main roof next, a job covering slate, rubber roofing, saddle hips and a flat copper section on one house, and new fascia boards, copper gutters and snow guards installed without an upsell push. Several reviewers describe bringing Doherty in as a second opinion after issues with another slate contractor, and say he spent unhurried time diagnosing the actual cause of a leak rather than proposing a bigger scope of work. Of 37 reviews on file, all but one run five stars. The exception is a short complaint that an initial call was never returned — worth keeping in mind if you're trying to reach them cold — though every review describing a job that actually got underway reports the opposite: responsive, communicative, and thorough through cleanup. The business carries an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and holds an A+, BBB-accredited rating, with the BBB profile crediting it with 26 years in business out of Somerville's Winter Hill neighborhood. Doherty's own site lists Boston, Newton and Wellesley as its service area, though the reviews span a wider footprint, including Somerville and Swampscott. For an older house with a slate or copper roof that needs someone who knows the material, this is the profile to call. Confirm they're available for your town and timeline before counting on them — the one recorded miss was reaching them in the first place.
Jason & team were super helpful & thorough in their repairs. They stayed in touch with us in the weeks after to ensure our initial slate & roof issues were fully resolved
Jason and his team did an excellent job with our slate roof for a very reasonable price. They replaced missing slates, made urgent repairs where needed, and helped us identify future issues before they became a problem. They even cleaned up some of the poor work done by previous roofers. We will definitely use Doherty Slate Roofing to maintain and fix our roof in the future.
Jason and team did amazing work on the slate and rubber roofs of our historic house. The attention to detail is outstanding and I can recommend him and company without reservation.
Excellent from start to finish. The staff here is just amazing.
We all search for home contractors asking the same questions: do they know what they're doing, do they act professionally, can/will they communicate effectively, are they reliable, will they respect me as a customer, and will they charge me a "fair" price. Rest assured, if you do business with Jason (and his workers), none of those concerns will ever be an issue. This is truly a top-notch contractor that my 155 yr old house will forever be grateful to.
