Don Foote Contracting is a design/build remodeling firm at 38 Montvale Avenue in Stoneham, Massachusetts, working across Greater Boston — Winchester, Newton, Weston, Brookline, Wellesley, Cambridge, Belmont, Dedham, Medford, Lexington, Concord and Arlington are the towns it names. It holds Massachusetts Home Improvement Contractor registration 168138, verified active in the state registry under Don Foote Contracting LLC. Don Foote runs it with an in-house team — a designer, a detail coordinator, an estimator and four project managers — and the carpentry is done by the company's own employees rather than subcontracted out. The work is high-end remodeling, custom cabinetry, fine carpentry and historic building conservation, and the firm carries a Guildmaster Award, a Qualified Remodeler 'quality leader' listing and eleven Houzz awards, with 36 projects posted across Winchester, Cambridge, Brookline and Concord. Its Houzz rating is 4.9 from 41 ratings, scoring 5.0 on both work quality and communication. The theme customers return to is that the schedule holds. A October 2022 client who had kitchen, baths and central air done said the team stayed right on schedule; a March 2022 homeowner's kitchen and dining room renovation, including all custom cabinets, finished on time. In an October 2016 review, a family who moved out during an extensive Cape addition — family room, three-season room, master suite and an extra garage stall — reported the final timelines were met without alteration even after unanticipated delays, and said neighbours remarked on how courteous the crew was. Pricing is where the record is more nuanced. In November 2016, a customer who talked to five contractors said Don Foote's estimate landed in the middle-to-high end of the quotes, but that the detail in the pricing showed a thorough understanding of the job, there were no surprise costs, and change orders were priced fairly. A July 2019 client renovating a condo said the budgeting held no surprises and praised Don's knowledge of historic buildings — and noted he met the condo association himself to explain a design choice needing approval. Houzz's own value sub-score, 4.0, sits a full point below work quality: this is not the cheap option. The cabinetry gets independent corroboration: in March 2016 the painting contractor who finishes the cabinets said Don Foote makes first-rate custom work and had watched the quality over many years. One caveat on the written record — the newest posted account dates from October 2022, and ten of the twelve are older still. They are real and consistent, but not current, so ask for references from the last year or two. Good fit for a design-led kitchen, bath or whole-floor renovation, an addition, or period-home work where cabinetry and carpentry detail matter and you want one firm carrying the schedule.
“Sherman Hoyt was issued a permit to remove the sun porch and install a two-story addition at 333 Highland Ave. Don Foote Contracting of Stoneham will be contracting the work for $125,000.”
We renovated our kitchen and baths and added central a/c with Don Foote Contracting. They did great work, were great communicators and stayed right on schedule.
Don did our kitchen and dining room renovation, it came out beautiful! Don and his team were a pleasure to work with and did an excellent job. They did all of our custom cabinets which were very high quality and they finished on time! Would definitely use Don Foote again and highly recommend him!
On the recommendation of friends, after interviewing several firms, I hired DFC for a kitchen/bathroom/pantry renovation. From the beginning it felt like a collaborative and creative endeavor. I tremendously enjoyed working with Marta to update my space and benefited from Don and Elise's input. Don is extremely knowledgeable about working in historical buildings and brings a terrific team of specialists whose input was enormously helpful in judgment calls about where to spend money and when a more economical choice would do just as well. There were no surprises in the budgeting, everything was clearly laid out and explained. I also greatly appreciated that Don willingly met with my condo association to explain a design choice that required their approval. I trusted the team (led very competently by construction manager Steve Perkins) to be in my home when I was out of the country for two months. In the aftermath of the renovation, they have been responsive in tweaking the results and addressing issues that arise. I am enjoying my beautifully renovated condo and I'm so pleased with the outcome! This is a team with integrity and style!
I would highly recommend DFC and his amazing crew! They are extremely knowledgeable, friendly, professional and have great vision on a loose palette. They show up on time, work hard during the day, clean up and end of day and come back the next day exactly the same. I'm so glad my amazing decorator, Brenda Reishus of Interior Fashion Advisors brought us together..The Dream Team
We worked with Don Foote Contracting (and project manager Steve Perkins) for a recent remodel of our kitchen and of a bathroom. We loved working with them. They were extremely thoughtful and helpful in the planning stage. The designer, Marta, came up with an idea for the layout of our kitchen that I would never have thought of and was a huge improvement over the original layout. Don went out of his way to think about the mid-century style of our house and make recommendations that suited it. And they were very receptive to our own ideas and thinking of ways to make them work. The construction process itself was extremely well organized and went pretty much to schedule (and no budget surprises). Steve was a pleasure to work with, and great at handling any little problems that came up, and handling various tricky construction details. We're delighted with the results, and would definitely work with DFC again!
