One customer had their mother's deck rebuilt after another contractor gutted it and simply walked away — a rescue job that says as much about Fairgrieve Custom Carpentry as any of its from-scratch builds. Jim Fairgrieve has run this Quincy, Massachusetts carpentry business for about nine years, usually working alongside a longtime partner named Steve, and both of his Massachusetts contractor licenses — a home improvement contractor registration and a construction supervisor license — are active with the state. Decks and porches are what people hire Jim for most, and the details repeat across years of reviews: he shows up when he says he will, manages the dumpster, lumber, permits and inspections himself, and leaves the job site clean every day. One family had him build custom handrails into a new deck for a daughter with special needs, in a 2023 review; another had a full basement converted into a playroom, bathroom and office, in a 2021 review. Beyond decks and porches, reviewers describe replacement windows and doors and a 105-year-old home's front porch demolished and rebuilt from the ground up, in a 2019 review. Angi shows a perfect 5.0-star average across 29 ratings, and every one of the 27 written reviews here, spanning 2018 to 2024, is five stars as well. The written reviews run through 2024 rather than anything more recent, and Angi's own profile notes the business doesn't offer free estimates, emergency service, or a formal warranty — worth asking about upfront when getting a quote. For a deck, porch, stairs, or a carpentry-heavy remodel in the Quincy area, Fairgrieve is a strong call given how consistently customers describe the same things — punctuality, clean work, and handling every permitting detail themselves; just confirm pricing and scheduling upfront since the business doesn't offer free estimates.
Jim and his staff did a fantastic job. I highly recommend him as he was professional and experienced. He was very fairly priced and cleaned up job site when completed. Would hire again for any project!
Jim & Steve were outstanding in their work. In a heartbeat I would have them back. Through the years I have dealt with many contractors and Jim & Steve made you feel good and they are truly nice people. The workmanship was excellent, if your looking for great work, you will not be disappointed.
Jim built a deck for me and it is hands down the nicest part of my house. It is absolutely beautiful and his work is meticulous. He showed up when he said he would and took care of everything. From the dumpster, to the lumber to the permits and inspections he manages it all. I would give him and Steve 10 stars if I could. If you’re looking for great fine craftsmanship at a fair price hire Jim!!
Jim & Steve are fantastic! They built us a new deck, and listened to everything we asked for, and even added special handrails for our special needs daughter. We hope to use them again for some other projects and would recommend them to everyone we know.
Amazing work sums it all up!??? Jim,Steve and Frank were just phenomenal in everything they did? Like clock work every morning they arrived and immediately got to work. Very professional very polite and never left the job site in a unsafe or littered state. There is just to many good things to say about them?I’ve never felt so comfortable and relaxed with any other workers I’ve had at my home in the past as I did with The Fairgrieves crew? I’d give a 10 star review if I could, my deck is just beautiful? Thank you Jim Frank Steve you guys are the best?
