The most telling thing on file for Gregory Barnes is not a review — it is a permit. In May 2024 he pulled a $145,000 job on a Marblehead house that involved relocating the stairs to the attic, framing a new bathroom and closets on the second floor, and cutting the roof for a new dormer with new windows. That is structural work, not a cosmetic refresh. He works under his own name out of 51 Pond Street in Marblehead, and the work listed for him runs from kitchen and bathroom remodels through basement conversions, whole-home renovations and additions. Five permitted projects are on file, four of them in the last three years, spanning job values from under $5,000 to the six-figure dormer build. The written record is a single voice, and it is old. In July 2021 a homeowner described a $10,000 finished-basement remodel that came in ahead of schedule — welcome, she wrote, with a baby on the way — praised the craftsmanship on the custom details, and said her family had used him on every project since. One dated account from a repeat customer is a real signal, but it is not enough to know how the work lands generally. BuildZoom lists two Massachusetts registrations for him — a home improvement contractor registration, #185255, and a construction supervisor licence, CS-109166 — and marks both as verified active in 2026. Those are the directory's own claims rather than confirmations from the state, though a construction supervisor licence alongside an HIC is the normal shape for someone doing framing and dormer work rather than a discrepancy. Look both numbers up yourself before you sign. If you have a Marblehead project that touches structure — a dormer, a stair relocation, a basement conversion — he has done that scale of job recently. Ask to see the finished dormer house, get references from the last year rather than 2021, and confirm the registrations at the state before work starts.

Greg did my finished basement remodel and it came out ahead of schedule which was appreciated with a baby on the way! The craftsmanship on some of the custom details are beautiful. He is a gifted contractor and we have since used him on all our projects. He's very polite and professional and always leaves a clean workspace.
